m. to 2 : 36 p.m. during the school year (September to June) Surrey Schools is seeking on-call casual Culinary Assistants.
These roles support the instruction of students in the Teaching Kitchen Programs in 11 Secondary Schools. When needed, the hours of work are typically 6.
56 hours per day. Hours of work are not guaranteed. Work follows the school calendar (September to June) and does recognize regular school closures i.
e. winter, spring and summer breaks. Incumbents will have the ability to apply into permanent positions (32.8 hours per week) when vacancies are posted.
Typical Duties Under the direction of the Teacher Chef, Supervises students in the receiving and storage of food deliveries, and the maintenance of good order in the Teaching Kitchen.
Demonstrates industry standard practices and methods; uses appropriate culinary terminology. Directs students on the correct and safe use and cleaning of equipment and tools.
Supervises food preparation by students for Lunch Service and for catering using techniques such as Mise en Place. Provides leadership to students to ensure that food safety and sanitation standards are followed at all times.
Acts as a Cashier during Lunch Service using a Point of Sale system. Communicates all concerns about the operations and students of the Teaching Kitchen to the Teacher Chef.
Occasionally the Culinary Assistant may prepare food, but this is not a cooking position. The Teaching Kitchen Program’s goal is to have the students successfully prepare the food and manage all aspects of the food service.
Mandatory Job Requirements Successful completion of one year post-secondary training in Culinary Arts Current Food Safe I certificate At least 1 year’s experience in a fast paced food service environment Ability to speak, read and write in English.
