Laboratory Technologist

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

Performing routine and specialized test procedures in Chemistry, Hematology and Transfusion Medicine; performing pre-analytical procedures including phlebotomy, specimen management and ECGs; organizing workflow to maintain performance standards of quantity and quality; observing, troubleshooting and reporting problems with methods, equipment etc. to his / her supervisor; ensuring cleanliness of equipment and immediate work area; following established safety and infection control procedures; participating in student / staff training programs, as required; and performing other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS :

• Certification with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Sciences (CSMLS);
• Current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO);
• Current theoretical and technical knowledge in Hematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry;
• Strong in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles and instruments and their interrelationships;
• Working and technical knowledge of the electronic and / or mechanical equipment necessary to perform routine and specialized testing;
• Proven problem solving skills, with the ability to recognize problems, identify the cause, create alternatives and determine solutions;
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills;
• Ability to exercise independent judgement, deductive reasoning with attention to detail;
• Ability to work effectively under pressure in emergency situations;
• Proven organizational skills with the ability to assess requests and prioritize them to ensure good and prompt patient care;
• Physically capable of performing bending, lifting, turning frequently throughout the shift to accomplish tasks;
• Recent experience in a Core Laboratory, preferred;
• Must have a satisfactory performance record;
