About Our Opportunity

This is a permanent position working alongside a dynamic and diverse team of passionate scientists, engineers and technicians whose work drives the protection and stewardship of our province’s water resources.

Primary Accountabilities

As the Water Resource Engineer, you will be responsible for :

  • Reviewing and evaluating technical reports (surface water management plans and water balance studies) received in support of regulatory approvals including the review of environmental assessments.
  • Overseeing both the technical and administrative management of the provincial hydrometric network.
  • Contributing to the vision, long term goals and strategies for advancing the department’s approach to water resource allocation and management.
  • Leading the development of regulatory amendments, standards, guidelines, policies and procedures and internal training tools to support program outcomes.
  • Providing support, as a subject matter expert, in public meetings, community outreach programs, interdepartmental task force or committees dealing with specific water resources management issues.

Qualifications and Experience

You are a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) licensed to practice in Nova Scotia, or eligible to be licensed in Nova Scotia, with a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, or Environmental Engineering.

To ensure you are successful in this role, you have at least 6 years of applied engineering experience in the following areas :

  • Sound understanding of water and environmental related principles and engineering concepts, including hydraulics and hydrology.
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting data from hydraulic and hydrologic models.
  • Experience developing or reviewing surface water management plans, water quantity monitoring programs and water balance studies.
  • Developing and managing water quantity monitoring programs.
  • Experience leading programs and projects.
  • Experience coaching and mentoring junior engineers.

The following are considered assets including experience and / or knowledge of :

  • Knowledge of provincial and federal Provincial and federal legislation, regulations, policies and program relevant to water resource engineering.
  • Strong computer skills in spreadsheets, word processing and presentation packages.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills that allow you to synthesize and articulate complex technical information to a range of technical and non-technical audiences.
  • ArcGIS Pro Experience

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools : written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions

A majority of your time will be spent in an office environment, but site visits may be required from time to time.

Pay Grade : PR 18

Salary Range : $3,231.58 - $3,800.42 Bi-Weekly
