Job description

The Linchpin Co. is a people operations group offering custom recruitment and consulting services. At Linchpin, we know a company's most valuable resource is its people, and we are people experts!

We will be the point of contact between you and Unity Design Studio during the recruitment process, acting as your trusted advisor and coach. We look forward to your interest.

THIS ROLE IS AVAILABLE IN BOTH KITCHENER & PETERBOROUGH.

About Unity Design Studio

Design with Impact. That’s more than our purpose. It’s Unity’s promise. Unity Design Studio is a B Corp certified practice shaping spaces where people live, learn, gather, and grow. We believe in design that serves people, strengthens communities, and leaves the world better than we found it. We lead by questioning, exploring, and imagining new possibilities. We serve by listening deeply and designing with care for people and place. We deliver by bringing vision to life with craft, clarity, and integrity.

Our studios evolve because our people do. We seek those who push, question, and reach, because that’s where the most meaningful work happens. It comes from people who are hungry to learn, open to challenge, and bring purpose to what they create. Collaboration keeps that energy alive. We work hard, laugh often, and keep pushing for better, because the world needs more than buildings. The world needs people who believe in what they build.

Join us. Let’s Design with Impact.

Who you are :

The Director of Standards and Quality is a senior architectural leader responsible for elevating studio wide technical excellence—from early design through documentation and construction administration. This role safeguards design intent while ensuring that the firm’s work is durable, code-compliant, well-coordinated, and delivered to the highest technical standards.

Working closely with Principals, Project Leads, and BIM leadership, the Director of Standards and Quality drives quality, manages risk, advances standards, and fosters a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and collaboration across the practice.

Technical Leadership

  • Champion consistent, high-quality, technically sound documentation across all studios and project types
  • Lead the development, implementation, and stewardship of the firmwide QA / QC program
  • Establish, maintain, and evolve technical standards, detailing libraries, and documentation conventions
  • Promote coordinated use of building systems, materials, specifications, and construction best practices
  • Support the firm’s sustainability goals through technically informed design and detailing

Quality Control, Technical Review, and Risk Management

  • Conduct structured technical and quality reviews at key project milestones
  • Provide holistic assessments of construction documentation and specifications
  • Identify technical, code-related, or constructability risks early and guide teams toward effective solutions
  • Advise on complex issues related to building envelope design, building science, life safety, and systems integration
  • Project Team Support and Problem-Solving

  • Collaborate with project architects, designers, technologists, engineers, and contractors to resolve technical challenges
  • Mentor and train staff to strengthen firmwide technical capabilities
  • Perform occasional site observations and translate field feedback into improved firm standards and practices
  • Occasional travel across our studio locations may be required
  • Assist Principals with technical content for proposals, contracts, and project planning
  • BIM, Standards, and Systems Integration

  • Partner with BIM leadership to align Revit-based detail libraries, templates, and workflows with technical standards
  • Ensure digital production tools support efficient, consistent, and high-quality documentation
  • Maintain strong coordination between BIM standards, technical guidelines, and QA / QC processes
  • Professional Practice, Culture, and Continuous Improvement

  • Lead initiatives that elevate the firm’s technical culture, knowledge base, and innovation capacity
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of master specifications and the project manual
  • Participate in internal learning programs, workshops, and office-wide initiatives
  • Represent the firm through conferences, seminars, publications, and professional engagement
  • Report regularly to the Director of Project Advancement and assist Principals in maintaining strong relationships with clients and consultants
  • Help foster a positive, collaborative, and high-performing studio culture
  • Key Skills / Experience :

  • Professional degree in architecture or diploma in architectural technology
  • 10+ years of diverse professional experience, including significant work on construction documents and construction administration
  • Deep knowledge of building codes, building science, envelope design, and structural and MEP systems
  • Demonstrated experience preparing and reviewing drawing sets with rigorous technical accuracy
  • Strong communication, leadership, and collaboration skills, with an enthusiasm for mentoring
  • High proficiency with Revit and digital production workflows
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent priorities across varied project phases
  • Curiosity, passion for design and architecture, and commitment to continuous improvement
  • LEED AP or sustainability expertise considered an asset
  • Ability to maintain and build strong client, consultant, and industry relationships
  • What we offer :

  • An opportunity to work for the highest-ranking B Corp certified architectural firm in Canada
  • Extended Health Benefits (Health, Life and Dental)
  • Professional association fees paid by Unity (OAA, RAIC)
  • Continuing education allowance of $1500.00 annually and 16 paid hours in which to complete this learning
  • Hybrid work environment with a minimum of 3 days on site at your affiliate studio and a maximum of 2 days remotely
  • Salary range of $120,000.00 to $145,000.00 commensurate with experience
  • Unity prides itself on our fair and equitable hiring practices. We encourage candidates from all backgrounds to apply. If you are an applicant with disabilities and require accommodations, please let us know at the time of contact and provisions will be arranged.
