The Centre for Headache assists patients from across Ontario to appropriately manage migraine and other disabling headache disorders and improve their quality of life.

Patients range in age from adolescents to older adults and often present with multiple co-morbidities and mental health challenges.

Recognized as a common chronic disorder, patient education and self-management approaches are integral to the care of these individuals.

As a member of an interdisciplinary team, the RN uses critical thinking and advanced knowledge / judgment in planning, implementing and evaluating the impact of nursing care.

Job Description :

  • Organizes the daily activities of the Centre for Headache Clinic for the provision of patient care.
  • Assists in the provision of procedural care for patients undergoing Botox and nerve block injections.
  • Receives calls that require nursing assessment, talks directly to patients on the telephone and provides pertinent instructions or information within scope of practice.
  • Confirms the reason for the office visit (chief complaint) and prepares the patient for examination.
  • Obtains and documents vital signs, health, and social histories.
  • Provides routine nursing support as directed by physicians and nurse practitioners and approved as standard practices (e.

g., procedural tests, positioning, assistance, specimen identification, medication preparation).

  • Educates patients to ensure comprehension of physician and nurse practitioner orders (e.g., prescriptions) and interpretation of treatment.
  • Assures continuity of care as patients transition across the continuum through appropriate discharge planning, patient education and coordination of services.
  • Identifies, prioritizes and responds to patient's problems and obtains patient's history.
  • Informs patients of procedure results as delegated by physician (e.g., lab, radiology or other investigative procedures) as required and organizes necessary follow-up arrangements.
  • Responds to and triages patient phone calls, gives advice as appropriate in consultation with physician and nurse practitioner.
  • Triages all incoming referrals in consultation with the interprofessional team.
  • Responds to patient problems raised in absence of physician. Using solution-focused approach assists patients to make realistic short and long term goals.
  • Participates in interprofessional teaching and learning of medical students (clerks, residents, fellows), nursing, and health discipline students within the Headache clinic.
  • Documents encounters according to nursing standards of practice and policy.
  • Participates in the development, improvement and delivery of individual / group education, both in person and virtual.
  • Participates in clinical research opportunities and assists with quality improvement projects.
  • Works with an interprofessional team (e.g. physicians, nurse practitioners, secretaries, health care assistant, etc.) to ensure the team functions efficiently and effectively and ensures continuity of patient care.
  • Ensures delivery of excellent customer service.

Qualifications :

  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Experience in Headache is required.
  • A foundational knowledge in neurology strongly recommended.
  • Experience in chronic disease, mental health and adolescent care is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Headache medications required.
  • Experience preparing nerve blocks and reconstituting Botox is an asset.
  • Excellent computer skills and a minimum of 2 years' experience with an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) or equivalent experience required.
  • Demonstrated ability to make autonomous nursing decisions regarding patient care.
  • Excellent phone skills are required as dealing with chronic pain patients with multiple comorbidities.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently triage a wide variety of primary patient situations and phone calls.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Excellent patient assessment, triaging skills and group patient teaching experience.
  • Willingness to participate or assist with Quality Improvement and Quality Assurance initiatives.
  • Demonstrated leadership and effective interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to organize time and set priorities effectively.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
