To support us on our journey, Sinai Health System is looking for a Pathologists' Assistant to support our Pathology and Laboratory Medicine department at Mount Sinai Hospital.
The Pathologist’s Assistant is responsible for some of the duties traditionally performed by the Pathologist. As such they are best regarded as a “Physician Extender” rather than an “Assistant”. Such highly skilled duties include :
- Evaluation, dissection and description and appropriate sampling of surgical specimens, requiring a detailed knowledge and understanding of normal and abnormal anatomy, pathology, clinical context and current protocols, as they pertain to the specimen. Proper handling and sampling of the surgical specimen is essential for accurate pathology diagnosis and thus patient safety
- Autopsy procedure including review and summation of patient identifying data, internal and external examination, evisceration, dissection, microdissection (in the case of fetal autopsy) and appropriate sampling for histology
- Train pathology residents in the skills of surgical specimen description, dissection and sampling, autopsy procedures and ancillary studies
Responsibilities include but not limited to :
Surgical Pathology :
Receive, accession and label surgical specimensProvide gross description, dissection and submission of histological sections for all surgical specimensSample and aliquot tissue specimens for ancillary studiesAssist pathologists in the processing of surgical specimensObtain clinical history, reports and other data as requiredPhotography and x-ray of specimens when necessary and maintain all pertinent recordsMaintain storage and disposal of specimensMaintain the areas and supplies in pathology receiving, grossing room, autopsy and specimen storage areaLoad tissue processorsMaintain clean and safe work areaAdhere to established safe work practicesAutopsy Pathology (Perinatal and Adult) :
Obtain patient charts, films and reports as requiredAssure proper legal consent for autopsyReview and summation of patient’s clinical historyPerform autopsy procedure including external / internal examination, evisceration, dissection, description and submission of histological sections and material for ancillary studiesFamiliarity with congenital cardiac malformations is preferredAssure proper restoration of body and release to funeral homeOversight of residents and Pathologists’ Assistant traineesParticipate in weekend coverage rotation for morgue duties, frozen section and cytological specimen preparationTeaching / Training :
Provide training in all aspects of surgical and autopsy pathology to Pathology residents from PGY 1 to PGY5 and Pathologists’ Assistant students (as outlined above)Teach medical studentsTeach MLT students with specific focus on histopathology, anatomy and physiologyTeach co-operative education students at university and high school levelsSupervise where required technicians, cooperative education students and volunteers Quality Assurance / Trouble shootingContinuously monitor various indicators in surgical pathologyTroubleshoot various problems across the department which will involve interactions with patients, administrative staff, technical staff, medical staff and outside clientsJob Requirements
Successful completion of a MSc / MClSc (Pathologists' Assistant) or BSc with MLT from an accredited educational institution requiredMinimum 2 years recent experience as a Pathologists’ Assistant preferredCAP membership and certification preferred; or eligible for certificationCMLTO registration or ASCP certification an assetGood working knowledge of computer applications, i.e. Lab Information System (LIS), MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and voice recognition software, i.e. Dragon Naturally SpeakingAbility to teach and mentor staff, residents and studentsGood oral and written communication skillsDemonstrated ability to work in a team environmentDemonstrated satisfactory performance and attendance history
