Director of Software Engineering - Global Platform Engineering

Overview

Director of Software Engineering - Global Platform Engineering leads TELUS' cloud-based Platform as a Service (PaaS) initiative. You will guide a global engineering organization to design, build, and operate a cloud-native platform that serves TELUS and its global partners. This is an early-stage initiative with a focus on delivering innovative solutions that connect people and businesses and drive digital transformation.

What you’ll do

• Reporting to the Vice-President of the Connected Home Division, lead the global engineering organization responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of TELUS' cloud-based PaaS.
• Define and execute the technical vision and strategy for the platform, aligning with TELUS' business objectives and customer needs.
• Apply deep technical expertise to lead architectural decisions and guide the team through complex development challenges, ensuring innovative and practical solutions.
• Develop and nurture senior talent within the engineering team, provide mentorship and growth opportunities, and leverage hands-on engineering experience to solve complex technical challenges.
• Thrive in a fast-paced, startup-like environment, influence product direction, and adapt quickly to changing priorities.
• Stay updated on emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices in cloud platforms and PaaS offerings, applying relevant knowledge to enhance TELUS' platform.
• Provide regular updates and reports on platform progress, performance, and impact to senior leadership and stakeholders.
• Ensure strong operational focus, overseeing platform reliability, scalability, and availability; implement monitoring, alerting, and incident response processes to proactively address issues.
• Collaborate with the operations team to establish and maintain SLAs and ensure regulatory and industry-standard compliance.

Qualifications

• Expertise in building and scaling cloud-based systems and providing insightful technical recommendations.
• Experience in fast-paced, startup-like environments with multi-hat roles and direct impact on product direction.
• Strong ability to foster collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning across teams and stakeholders.
• Proven ability to align internal and external stakeholders to deliver solutions/platforms.
• Exceptional communication skills to influence decisions, drive adoption, and support platform integration and performance.
• Proven track record leading global engineering organizations, preferably for cloud-based platforms or PaaS.
• Ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and gain buy-in for a larger vision.
• Strong technical background in cloud computing, distributed systems, and software engineering, with a focus on AWS services.
• Experience building diverse, high-performing teams and engaging with people at all levels to promote inclusivity and diversity.
• Willingness to travel as needed to engage with global partners and stakeholders.

Great to have

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
