The Role
As a Database Reliability Engineer (DBRE) on our Technology Team, your primary purpose will be to ensure the seamless and secure functioning of the datastores that support our platform. You will design solutions for large‑scale engineering challenges, such as multi‑regional scaling and data sovereignty requirements, and contribute to the reliability, availability, performance, disaster recovery, automation and security of Cover Genius databases.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist application teams in selecting and optimizing datastore architectures and technologies
- Optimize queries, migrations and perform other datastore performance tuning
- Implement automation and reduce toil for datastore management
- Deploy, upgrade and maintain datastores
- Troubleshoot database‑related production incidents (On Call)
- Develop, test and maintain disaster recovery procedures for datastores
- Implement monitoring and alerting using key database metrics
- Develop and maintain troubleshooting documentation and runbooks
- Optimize and control costs of the company’s storage infrastructure
- Create and refine SLOs for datastores
Qualifications
- At least 5 years running major database technologies in production, especially PostgreSQL and MySQL; cloud experience ideally on AWS RDS
- Understanding of SRE principles and best practices
- Experience operating NoSQL datastores and cache technologies such as Elasticsearch, Redis, S3, DynamoDB, BigQuery and RabbitMQ
- Excellent understanding of SQL and SQL database performance optimization
- Comfortable scripting and developing internal tooling with Bash or a programming language (e.g. Python, Go)
- Familiar with internals of PostgreSQL
- Experience with infrastructure and configuration‑as‑code tools, especially Terraform
- Experience working with Linux
- Solid theoretical understanding of underlying data‑storage technologies and trade‑offs
- Good knowledge of AWS and/or GCP platforms and associated best practices
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent practical experience

Benefits & Salary
- Base salary range: C$135,000 – C$175,000 annually
