PROGRAM SUMMARY :

The Family Support Worker provides direct, relevant support services for parents and caregivers (and children and youth within the context of the family). The Program provides consultation for families to assist and guide them in the development of effective behaviour management techniques and promote healthy adult-child and youth relationships, bridge-transitions, and stabilize home placements for children and youth. In addition, a range of social, educational, community based, and outreach activities are provided that empower and strengthen the capacity of families to care for their children. Services span from intensive individual interventions to group services that promote mutual aid.

The Family Support Worker provides education and support services out of the main SCSA office and within family homes with the hopes of decreasing multiple placements for children and youth.

POSITION :   Family Support Worker – Full Time (this is temporary until March 31, 2025, with the possibility of extension based on funding.)

JOB TYPE : 14 hours per week (Internal / External)

COMPENSATION : $29.17 - $33.49

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS :

Reports To : Family Support Program Manager

Direct Reports :  None

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Assist and guide caregivers in identifying and implementing strategies to respond to, and support shifts, in children and youth’s responses and behaviours.
  • Create a welcoming environment for families, conduct intake and needs assessments in order to strategize and identify specific goals and areas of supports.
  • Provide educational resources, activities and hands-on support for caregivers to increase knowledge and understanding of child development, cultivate consideration of the child’s development and his / her unique circumstances, and improve parenting skills and family relationships.
  • Provide educational information, access to resources, and specialized activities for children and youth (within the context of the family) to build on strengths and capacity, promote self-esteem and resilience, nurture healthy development with consideration of their specific developmental stages and unique circumstances, and support improved healthy adult and / or family relationships through a variety of strategies, specific to each child or youth.
  • Assist caregivers and / or youth in the development of formal and informal support systems such as family, friends, other caregivers and services within the community.
  • Offer group family support services that promote the well-being of children, families and caregivers.
  • Participate in agency meetings and inter-agency meetings in the community as required.
  • Maintain accurate daily and monthly records concerning client contacts and maintaining accurate time and expense records for submission at month’s end.
  • Adhere to program budget and working within the team on program goals.
  • Maintain up to date resources, information, and research relevant for program.
  • Actively participate in regular performance evaluations.
  • Engage in regular reflective team clinical supervision and one-on-one supervision with the Program Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS : Education

  • Must have or be working towards a Social Service Worker Diploma or related diploma / degree and experience in a similar or related position.
  • Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience working with individuals, families and communities impacted by childhood trauma.
  • Ability to provide positive, client-focused, strengths-based services to those most at need living in our communities.
  • Knowledge and experience working with Indigenous people in communities in this region, and from a variety of multicultural orientations and social locations.
  • Grounded in trauma-informed practice, attachment-based approaches, and cultural humility.
  • Current certification in Occupational First Aid and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention or willingness to obtain.
  • Skills and Abilities

  • Possesses excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Flexible and willing to work collaboratively and build strong working partnerships.
  • Self-directed and works well independently and as part of a team.
  • Motivated, well organized and detail orientated with the ability to prioritize.
  • Ability to develop and deliver workshops and presentations.
  • Working Conditions

  • ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS :

  • Be familiar with, and adhere to, the philosophy, policies and procedures of SCSA.
  • Understand and be committed to terms of confidentiality, and signing a pledge of confidentiality.
  • Undergo a Criminal Record Search as and when required by the Association.
  • Possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License, and reliable vehicle.
