Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to lead the HR function. We are looking for a strong HR operator who can stand-up the HR function, deliver a core set of HR services to our managers and employees. The position will be responsible for Talent Management, Recruitment, Learning and Development, Compliance, Payroll, Benefits, HR systems, and Employee Relations. We will launch the business with the support of PEO / EOR partners. Experience managing these types of relationships and accessing other relevant external experts will be highly valuable. While most of the workforce will be in Canada, knowledge of US workforces and regulations will also be highly valuable.

This role will work closely with senior leadership, including the CEO and departmental managers, to develop and implement HR policies and strategies that align with the company's long-term goals.

Responsibilities :

Strategic HR Advice :

  • Act as a trusted advisor to the CEO and senior management, providing HR insights and strategic guidance on people-related matters and change management.
  • Assist in leadership development and coaching, performance feedback, and creating a high-performance work culture.
  • Contribute to long-term strategic planning and organizational development, aligning HR initiatives with the company’s growth and operational objectives.

Recruitment & Onboarding :

  • Collaborate with managers and the executive team to understand talent needs and support recruitment efforts across both Canada and the US.
  • Develop job descriptions, recruitment strategies, and talent acquisition processes to ensure the company attracts top talent.
  • Oversee the onboarding process and ensure a smooth transition for new employees, including cross-border employment issues and immigration considerations.
  • HR Operations & Policy Development :

  • Develop and implement HR policies and procedures in line with both Canadian and US employment laws and company needs.
  • Ensure consistent application of HR policies and best practices across both countries.
  • Lead employee relations initiatives, including conflict resolution, performance management, and coaching.
  • Compliance & Regulatory Oversight :

  • Stay current on changes to labor laws and regulations in both Canada and the US, ensuring the company remains compliant.
  • Provide guidance on HR compliance issues, including compensation, benefits, employee rights, and safety regulations.
  • Liaise with external legal counsel, where necessary, to ensure compliance and mitigate risks.
  • Payroll & Benefits Management :

  • Oversee payroll processing for employees across both countries, ensuring accuracy and compliance with tax and employment regulations.
  • Administer employee benefits programs, including health, dental, retirement plans, and other benefits.
  • Manage the relationship with external vendors, including PEOs / EORs, review effectiveness, and finetune the model.
  • Talent Management :

  • Support leaders in identifying appropriate learning and development strategies for their team
  • Work with leadership to streamline the annual review processes, and manage the program going forward
  • Measure and drive employee engagement.
  • Key Requirements :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field (HR certification is a plus).
  • CHRP (Certified Human Resources Professional) or SHRM-SCP certification preferred.7+ years of progressive HR experience, with a significant portion of that experience in Canada, and a solid understanding of US employment practices.
  • Direct experience managing HR operations (payroll, benefits, ER) for a mid-sized company, which ideally also includes working with or managing PEO / EOR relationships.
  • Organized, efficient, and willing to take the lead in your area of expertise
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Ideally, you also have :

  • Strong knowledge of Canadian and US labor laws, tax requirements, and compliance obligations.
  • Experience building or significantly developing a HR function
  • Ability to develop and implement HR policies, manage complex employee relations issues, and navigate cross-border employment laws.
  • Proficiency with HRIS systems, performance management tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience in the energy sector (beneficial but not essential).
