Sr. Automation Engineer, Calgary, AB

As an Automation Engineering expert and key member of the Project Engineering team, you will act as MEGs owner Automation Engineer supporting all capital projects. You will help ensure successful projects by working closely with MEGs Engineering Alliance Partner (EAP) on design and MEGs Industrial and Automation Control Systems (IACS) team on commissioning, start-up and on-going operations.

The location of this role is split between MEG’s Calgary office and MEG’s Engineering Alliance Partner’s office which is also located in Calgary.

You must be able to occasionally travel to our Christina Lake facilities near Conklin, Alberta. This involves flying from Calgary to our Christina Lake aerodrome and staying in our on-site camp facilities.

Your day-to-day will include :

  • Provide adequate quality assurance to ensure safe and compliant designs.
  • Ensure design meets scope intent and look for opportunities to reduce capital and operating costs, and schedule.
  • Ensure EAP engineers are qualified to do work on MEGs behalf. Act with a mentoring mindset to improve the skills and knowledge of EAP engineers.
  • Provide design clarity where optionality exists and on application of MEG design practices.
  • Capture lessons learned and improvement opportunities for future use.
  • Ensure key project design decisions are based on MEG’s risk criteria and consider the operating lifecycle of the facility.
  • Key participant in design hazops and risk reviews, layer of protection analysis (LOPAs) and alarm rationalization exercises, representing MEG and the Automation Engineering discipline.
  • Provide technical support during installation, commissioning, and maintenance phases
  • Stay current with industry advancements

  • Qualifications :

  • Required : 15+ years of experience, and APEGA registration as a P. Eng or P.L. Eng.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Diploma in Technology in a related field
  • F.S. Eng. or CFSE Certification is valuable.
  • Skills and Competencies :

  • Demonstrated engineering experience in the design of instrumentation and industrial control systems.
  • Knowledge and experience with : P&IDs, Shutdown Keys, Control Narratives, Instrument Index, Datasheets, etc.PLC and DCS (Delta V preferred) systems.Communication protocols such as DeviceNet, Modbus, Ethernet / IP, etc.
  • Strong understanding of control system architecture, control panel lay-outs, instrumentation, and industrial networking.
  • Proficient with MS Office, MS SQL, MS Excel, VBScript, Access.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and a strong attention to detail are essential
  • Knowledge and experience with industry and government standards such as ISA, IEC, NEC, API requirements for process facilities.
  • Competent in risk analysis techniques such as Hazops and Layers of Protection Analysis.
