MCW Consultants Ltd. is seeking a Mechanical Design Technologist to join our Vancouver Office. Permanent, Full-time; 37.5 hours / week, overtime as required. $36.60 per hour, plus 3 weeks of vacation time, extended health and dental package, and RRSP matching.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following :
- Prepare detailed fire protection and fire suppression system designs using AutoCAD and REVIT, with a primary focus on sprinkler and standpipe systems
- Prepare project correspondence, including site instructions, memos, field review reports, etc.
- Client liaison on selected projects.
- Perform detailed sprinkler head, piping, and valve layout designs, coordinated with architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical building systems
- Design layout, calculations and equipment selections, under supervision of experienced staff.
- Self-perform all aspects of fire protection design and production when required, including calculations, system layouts, equipment selection and sizing, CAD / REVIT drafting, and red-line markups.
- Co-ordinate design work with mechanical & electrical disciplines, architect, and other project consultants.
- Assist in preparation of mechanical and fire protection specifications.
- Assist in preparation of accurate mechanical schedules.
- Assist in preparation of accurate fire protection schedules and schematics.
- Co-ordinate with electrical discipline to ensure mechanical and fire protection requirements are captured.
- Coordinating with difference disciplines (structural, electrical, architectural, etc.) during project design.
- Carry out and modify hydraulic calculations for fire protection systems using SprinkCAD and AutoSPRINK, including verification of system compliance with applicable standards
- Apply and interpret NFPA standards (including NFPA 13, 14, 20, and 25), BC Building Code, and local AHJ requirements in the development of fire protection designs.
- Perform detailed fire protection design drawings within SprinkCAD and AutoSPRINK software.
- Modify and perform corrections to hydraulic calculations within SprinkCAD and AutoSPRINK software for various fire protection projects.
- Attend site meetings and field reviews as required by the project manager.
- Provide technical and administrative support through all phases of the project.
- Liaise with fire protection contractors, suppliers, and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) during design development and construction
- Strive to ensure quality and timely delivery of finished products to clients.
- Overtime as required.
Qualifications, Experience and Education
Completion of post-secondary education in a related field such as Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or Building Systems Technology is required;At least 3 years of previous work experience in mechanical and fire protection design is required;Experience and working knowledge of SprinkCAD and AutoSPRINK is required;Must be working towards obtaining Certified Engineering Technologist Designation in British Columbia;Background in developing construction documents using AutoCAD and / or Revit is required;Familiarity with Microsoft Office tools, including Excel, Word, Project and PowerPoint, is required;Experience working with customers and client base is an asset;Experience working in a team-based environment is an asset;Experience in site investigations and construction review is an asset.Required Skills
Knowledge of Canadian Engineering standards;Excellent English communication skills (written and verbal). The successful candidate must be able to communicate effectively in both written and verbal formats to support coordination and collaboration. This includes clearly presenting ideas and project recommendations to all levels of the organization, as well as to external stakeholders such as contractors, suppliers, and multidisciplinary teams (e.g., structural, electrical, architectural).
