Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller is responsible for financial accounting and record keeping functions, financial statement analysis, month end and year-end close activities, assisting in budgeting / forecasting and continuous improvement initiatives.

Structure :

4 direct reports : A / R, A / P, Payroll; 2 indirect reports : Financial Analyst, Cost Accountant.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Lead the month end close process to ensure completeness and accuracy of record keeping, including review and approval of journal entries and account reconciliations, setting clear expectations for timelines and deliverables.
  • Provides in-depth financial and business analysis and reporting to support Controller.
  • Responsible for leading the year end external audit of the group of companies and liaising with the external auditors.
  • Maintains consistency of adherence to accounting policies, procedures, goals and suggests changes / improvements where appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain key analytics to monitor financial accounting and other business results related trends.
  • Coordinate with various staff for matters affecting the general ledger and key metrics.
  • Manages treasury function, including cash flow forecast and bank transfers.
  • Assist with Insurance Management to ensure that all appropriate insurance coverage is maintained to mitigate risks and maintain appropriate premiums, through annual reporting to insurance provider.
  • Oversee internal control and tracking process for fixed assets and capital projects, including involvement and support as necessary with project ROI measures and development.
  • Oversee payroll department for both Canadian and US payrolls including adherence to union collective agreements.
  • Supervise day to day accounting functions, promoting career development, and training plans, setting annual performance targets, and providing regular performance feedback and coaching.
  • Monitor compliance with company policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements :

Skills & Qualifications :

  • 3-5+ years of progressive financial experience, focused on financial accounting, reporting and planning.
  • A professional CPA accounting designation (CGA, CMA, or CA).
  • Strong technical skills in accounting, financial analysis in a multi-company and multi-currency environment and legal entity reporting.
  • Strong leadership aptitude; superior interpersonal and communication skills; excellent listener and motivator.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and across various business units within the organization, proactively identify and respond to needs and inquiries, and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills with the ability to maintain professional and effective working relationships.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills; ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Attention to detail and excellent analytical, reasoning, and time management skills.
  • Strong computer & systems ability, including Advanced Microsoft Excel.
