Settlement Consultant, Group Disability
Reporting to the Director, Appeals & Litigation, the Settlement Consultant is responsible for proactively managing a block of long term disability claims by applying Sun Life’s non-litigated settlement strategy to appropriate claims in order to better serve our clients and improve financial outcomes.
What will you do?
Identify issues and solutions on LTD claims that require follow-up within the disability operations
Consistently build strong working relationships with members of our legal services department, disability claims operations, marketing, finance and other stakeholders, working proactively and in partnership with them
Contribute to the ongoing business retention and growth by building strong working relationships with our customers and by your proactive engagement with plan sponsors
Contribute to a dynamic work environment by identifying opportunities to continuously improve processes to better meet our service excellence, quality and financial commitments to our customers
Coach and mentor other team members within the team as opportunities arise
Demonstrate an excellent knowledge of group insurance, disability case management strategies and risk management.
Exhibit strong communication, organizational and people skills
Help prioritize work in order to meet customer expectations
Build strong, effective relationships with your Director, and other members of the Non-Litigated, Appeals & Litigation team working in partnership with them to help the team meet expected business outcomes
Main Accountabilities related to Settlements
Work in partnership with the rest of the settlement team to continually provide input to the development and enhancement of the settlement strategy
Review long term disability claims (both actively managed and long duration) to identify non-litigated settlement opportunities
Contact and obtain buy-in from plan sponsors; this will involve attending plan sponsor meetings to showcase the settlement strategy
Contact plan members to make a settlement offer ensuring strict adherence to the settlement practice and striving for a win / win solution for all stakeholders
Prepare all supporting paperwork (offer letters, legal releases, etc…) to complete successful settlements
Coach and educate internal GD stakeholders (DCM, RC) on the settlement strategy, providing expert advice; this will involve meetings / presentations to showcase the benefits of the settlement strategy as a claims management tool
Build engaging presentations and proactively contact plan sponsors to obtain buy-in, attending sponsor meetings to present and promote the settlement strategy.
Contact plan members directly ake a settlement offer ensuring strict adherence to the settlement practice and striving for a win / win solution for all stakeholders
Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with DCMs and RCs to consistently meet monthly rehabilitation referral objectives
What do you need to succeed?
As this position is posted in several locations, we specify that bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for Quebec only for the frequent interactions with English and French-speaking colleagues or internal partners across Canada or worldwide.
Bilingual is an asset
Minimum 5 years disability management experience
Expert knowledge of disability case management strategies
Sound understanding of client financial arrangements, and business impact of claims decisions;
Strong analytical and problem solving skills

Excellent written documentation and verbal communication skills;

Strong organizational, analytical and decision making skills

Claims and rehab experience is an asset
Demonstrates a proven track record of achieving strategic objectives and delivering outcomes.
