The Grande Prairie Public School Division is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse to provide specialized medical care and educational assistance in a classroom setting. This role is primarily responsible for providing specialized medical care to students to ensure they are safe, supported, and able to meaningfully participate in their educational programs. Candidate should have a strong understanding of tracheostomy acuity and be competent / confident in working with the same. In addition to providing nursing care, the LPN will support classroom programming by functioning as a general Educational Assistant when assigned students requiring medical care are absent or when direct medical support is not required. The LPN may also be assigned to other classrooms or students a part of this role. This blended role supports inclusive education and student success within a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment. Working as part of a team, this position supports the classroom teacher and multi-disciplinary team in providing an inclusive learning environment by supporting both medical and educational needs of students.Responsibilities include : Nursing and Medical CareAssess, plan, deliver and evaluate nursing care for a medically fragile individual. Training will be provided to ensure all members of the team (LPN, Teacher, Educational Assistants, etc.) are aware of the student’s medical care requirements. This care includes but is not limited to : Assessment- the ability to assess tracheostomy stoma, respirations, and work of breathing. Must have the ability to recognize respiratory distress and the development of same. Suctioning- the ability to recognize when trach suctioning is required. Candidate will have the ability and knowledge to suction tracheostomy using sterile technique. Knowledge on how to handle changing trach secretions is necessary. Emergency Response- candidate will have the ability to identify and respond to an emergency with a tracheostomy. Candidate will have BLS (healthcare) CPR and be knowledgeable on adapting same for CPR with a tracheostomy.Educational Assistant SupportAssist classroom students in following educational programs, strategies, exercises, and materials identified / developed and introduced by the classroom teacher.Assist the teacher in the preparation of instructional material to support the needs of specific students. Provide feedback to the teacher on their observations of students.Assist with individual and small group learning activities.Support student participation during classroom activities, field trips, and school events.Encourage positive interactions and engagement among students.Desirable assets include : Familiar with the developmental, educational, emotional, social and recreational needs of children, youth and families. Experience working with school aged children.
