Job description

Duties and Responsibilities :

Reporting to the Assistant Manager, the incumbent is responsible for the financial administration of research grants and contracts, enterprise and service agreements, as well as professional expense reimbursements. This position is responsible for the financial management and cost accounting of funds throughout the lifecycle of the agreements. This involves, but is not limited to, reviewing the financial terms and conditions of research agreements, approving expenses, investigating variances, issuing invoices, collecting payments and financial reporting. The incumbent liaises with all stakeholders associated with the assigned portfolio.

The incumbent is part of the Research Financial Services team and works directly with the Assistant Manager and the Director.

Qualifications :

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications :

  • The University relies on the sound understanding and application of the funding agencies and University policies and financial controls.
  • The incumbent must be able to apply GAAP in the management of funds.
  • Analytical and problem solving skills are required to identify financial and non-financial issues and determine an appropriate course of action.
  • The incumbent requires exceptional interpersonal, organizational, analytical, oral communication and writing skills, as well as flexibility.
  • Proven capacity to excel in an independent, and ever changing work environment.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to adhere to strict deadlines in a fast paced, dynamic environment is essential.
  • The incumbent must be adept at effectively and efficiently determining priorities.
  • Must employ an extensive knowledge of Carleton University's accounting system (Banner), and the related financial software systems (FAST Reporting, FAST Research, FAST JV, FAST BAR, FAST AR, eShop, Travel & Expense and internally developed systems).

Education and Experience :

The above is normally acquired through the completion of :

  • Completion of a University / College degree with an emphasis on Business and / or Accounting with 1 or 2 years enrolment in an accounting designation program.
  • 5 years experience in accounting, including 1 year in project / fund accounting. The incumbent must be adept at using a computerized accounting system and spreadsheets.
