As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to strengthen and promote health protection to patients, staff and members of the public attending in the hospital, prior to the first day of employment with the Hospital, all successful candidates are required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination (full vaccination is required) from the Ontario Ministry of Health website or other authorized source.

An individual is fully vaccinated if they have provided proof of vaccination in the form of a receipt from COVaxON (the Ministry’s provincial system for COVID-19 vaccination information) and 14 days have elapsed from the final dose.

In the event that you are unable to be vaccinated as a result of a ground protected under the Human Rights Code, you may submit a written explanation of the ground and any supporting documentation to determine if you are exempt from this requirement.

Position Summary

RT (Orthopaed) Registered Orthopaedic Technologist - written, oral and practical exam successfully completed

Your goal in this position is to perform and / or assist with care of orthopaedic patients and function under the direction of a physician.

You have superior verbal and written communication skills, and are able to interpret and follow medical directions. You are able to work effectively with minimal supervision.

This position supports the hospital’s academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and / or transforming care through research and innovation.

This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for staff, physicians, volunteers, learners, patients and families.

On a practical level, you will

  • Perform work assignments under the direction of a physician and within the limits of hospital policies
  • Perform assignments of applying trimming, bivalving, windowing and removing casts; apply and remove bandages and splints;

assist physicians with traction and casts in the operating room, on units and in the emergency department; assist physicians with procedures in the Orthopaedic & Plastics Centre and Emergency Department, assist patients on inpatient units when required

  • Function collaboratively with minimal supervision
  • Excellent working knowledge of anatomy and physiology
  • Able to interpret simple fractures and dislocations on x-ray film (within scope of practice)
  • Maintain procedural competence by attending in-service and physicians’ rounds; read and generally keep updated with current trends in orthopaedics
  • Accurate documentation within scope of practice
  • Educate patients and family care and follow-up of orthopaedic appliances
  • Assist in the transport of patients as required

Supplies and Environment :

  • Maintain an adequate supply of all equipment and supplies used in the Orthopaedic & Plastics Centre
  • Assist in selection, evaluation, maintenance, and repair of equipment
  • Ensure economical use of supplies
  • Observe the work area, equipment and supplies for hazardous conditions and infection control
  • Maintain safe work area

Communication and education :

  • Communicate effectively (both written and verbal) with emphasis on explaining care of orthopaedic appliances to patient, family and other staff
  • Communicate effectively with multigenerational population
  • Have excellent skills in providing and receiving constructive feedback
  • Participate in teaching
  • Ensure efficient patient flow through the Ambulatory clinics and Emergency Department
  • Effectively train students and colleagues
  • Assists with selection and interviewing new staff

Qualifications

  • Orthopaedic Technologist Diploma / Certificate
  • RT (Orthopaedic) Registered Orthopaedic Technologist - written, oral and practical exam successfully completed
  • Member of Canadian Society of Orthopaedic Technologists (CSOT)
  • Have at least 5 years of experience working in both ED and / or ambulatory care
  • Advanced practice in ortho technologist skills
  • Current BCLS required
  • Bilingualism in French / English an asset
