Overview
The Polysomnographic Technologist is responsible for performing polysomnograms for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep / arousal disorders. Duties include receiving requisitions and preparing patients for studies, monitoring, recording, and scoring physiologic data during sleep, entering relevant data into a computerized database, and conducting various non-invasive tests (electroencephalography, electrooculography, electromyography, electrocardiography, multiple sleep latency testing and respiratory tracings). The technologist monitors patients during procedures, records measurements, and prepares technical reports for interpretation by medical staff. Maintains equipment performance and safety in accordance with guidelines.
Responsibilities
- Receives and prepares patients for polysomnographic studies by reviewing physician requisitions, case history, and context to determine study direction. Explains procedures, connects monitoring devices, and ensures patient comfort while obtaining required results.
- Conducts polysomnographic tests using non-invasive techniques (EEG, EOG, EMG, ECG, MSLT, respiratory tracings). Operates monitoring devices, calibrates equipment, analyzes data, and ensures reports are generated for clinical interpretation.
- Maintains continuous surveillance of patients during studies and responds to emergencies per established policies (including CPR when required).
- Forms preliminary polysomnographic study reports to aid diagnosis and treatment evaluation, describing observations and forwarding results to physicians for clinical use.
- Maintains, monitors, and tests laboratory equipment integrity per manufacturer guidelines; calibrates, cleans, runs diagnostics, and reports issues to management for action.
- Participates in quality control by troubleshooting problems and maintaining service standards.
- Maintains patient records and data in computerized databases, and summarizes information into written reports as requested.
- Guides clinical experience of new staff and students; demonstrates procedures and equipment use; provides input on progress and adherence to standards.
- Participates in team activities and departmental initiatives to ensure efficient service delivery; promotes quality management and safe laboratory operations.
- Contributes to interdisciplinary research and special projects; collects data and summarizes information for review.
- Sets measurable goals in alignment with the organization’s vision and develops professional development plans with management.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Diploma in Respiratory Therapy or Electroneurophysiology Technology from an accredited institution. One (1) year of recent, related sleep study experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Eligible for registration with the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT). Current CPR certification.
Broad knowledge of polysomnographic theory and practice for conducting tests and recording / analyzing parameters.Knowledge of sleep-related physiological changes in neurological, musculoskeletal, cardiac, and respiratory systems.Ability to interpret electroencephalographic, electroculographic, electromyographic, electrocardiographic, MSLT and respiratory tracings.Experience with monitoring devices and instrumentation used in sleep studies.Knowledge of ventilator support devices (home ventilators, BIPAP, CPAP).Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to establish workload priorities; computer literacy (word processing, spreadsheets, databases).Demonstrated CPR ability and physical capacity to perform duties.About Fraser Health
