Job Purpose

The Mechanical Engineer on the ICOR R&D Team plays a critical role in the design, development, testing and support of advanced robotic systems for mission‑critical applications. This position focuses on creating innovative mechanical solutions that enhance product performance, reliability and usability. Working closely with cross‑functional teams, the engineer contributes to the full product lifecycle, from concept and prototyping to production and continuous improvement, ensuring that ICOR’s robotics systems meet the highest standards of quality and functionality.

Role – Typical Duties

• Interpret conventional and computer‑assisted design (CAD) engineering designs, drawings and specifications for products and components.
• Design products using SolidWorks, including part numbering, sourcing suppliers, building prototypes and documenting findings.
• Collaborate with Product, Design and Business stakeholders to plan and prioritise feature development.
• Conduct tests and analyses of products and materials to determine their performance, strength, response to stress and other characteristics.
• Assist in the inspection, assembly, repair and maintenance of products and components.
• Support the capture and documentation of R&D department procedures and processes.
• Apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
• Handle Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) and Non‑Conformance Reports (NCRs).
• Perform other duties as required.

Skills and Training Required

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace or Mechatronic Engineering.
• 2+ years of experience using SolidWorks to design machined parts, assemblies and sheet metal parts.
• Proficiency in creating new and maintaining existing geometry, drawings and production documentation.
• At least two years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
• Strong knowledge of stress analysis and finite element analysis (FEA).
• Expertise in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
• Up‑to‑date knowledge of safe work practices, including WHMIS compliance.
• Constant attention to process improvement.
• Effective listening and verbal communication skills for interacting with peers, customers and suppliers.
• Ability to work autonomously or collaboratively in a team environment.
• Strong problem‑solving skills, with a creative and constructive approach.
• Eagerness to learn new tools, systems and technologies.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

• Experience with SolidWorks surfacing and tooling design for injection moulding or casting.
• Familiarity with additive technologies and 3D printing.
• Knowledge of plastics design, surfacing and tooling.
• Understanding of spur, planetary, worm, harmonic, cycloidal and hybrid planetary/cycloidal gearboxes, including sizing and applications in robot arms, quadrupeds and humanoid robots.
• Knowledge of motor encoders, torque sensor types and their uses.
• Experience with brushed and brushless DC (BLDC) motor types, sizing and controls.
• Understanding and use of large language models (LLMs) for research and design guidance.
