What you'll do :

As Legal Counsel, your role will encompass critical areas such as intellectual property, litigation, multi-faceted transactions, privacy, government contracting and technology licensing.

To be successful in this role you will be an enthusiastic and collaborative professional with strong litigation experience.

In addition, the successful candidate will bring a genuine passion and familiarity with the software, programming, and related technology.

How you'll make an impact :

  • Manage Geotab's litigation activities, including liaising with external counsel and internal stakeholders, coordinating responses to subpoenas and requests for document production.
  • Support legal aspect of risk management strategies with particular concern for product safety, compliance, cyber security and non-practicing entities.
  • Develop in-depth technical knowledge and understanding of Geotab product offerings.
  • Provide legal support for product design, development and implementation activities
  • Provide input into strategies addressing industry-wide stakeholder dynamics emanating from broader issues related to AI, big data, "internet of things", data privacy and other emerging industry issues.
  • Manage complex legal agreements with a major focus on technology, data licensing, government contracting, privacy and intellectual property;

these include end user agreements, distribution agreements, enterprise-level Customer agreements, OEM (vehicle manufacturer) agreements, wireless carrier agreements and non-disclosure agreements.

Support negotiations with Resellers, Customers, solution partners, OEMs, suppliers, governments and other stakeholders in a global context;

integrate legal, technical and business considerations with a focus on practical solutions and strong business relationships.

  • Provide input into legal strategy addressing mass / electronic contracting, third-party flow-through and dynamic product development requiring constant upgrades and change.
  • Provide general legal support for corporate, commercial and human resources / employment matters.
  • Support Geotab global strategic initiatives, including global expansion and new market entry.

What you'll bring to this role :

  • 5-8 years of experience with a law firm or in-house legal department.
  • Litigation experience, including intellectual property litigation, general litigation, responding to subpoenas and document production requests, both local and international.
  • Knowledge of intellectual property laws and practice.
  • Experience negotiating and working with large, multi-national, regulated organizations and municipal, State and federal government entities.
  • Familiarity with AI, business intelligence and data analytics operations as well as privacy surrounding these activities.
  • Previous exposure to and affinity for software, programming, computing and related technology.
  • Thorough understanding of the telematics industry and applicable legislation and regulations.
  • Strong sense of ethics and the ability to handle sensitive or private information with tact and discretion.
  • Knowledge of data privacy laws.
  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and relationship management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including comfort with delivering presentations and public speaking.
  • Post-Secondary Degree / Diploma Specialization in Law with license to practice in Ontario.
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
