Halifax Regional Police is looking for individuals who have a passion for volunteering and a desire to make a difference in our community.

Applications are accepted throughout the year, with annual recruitment only taking place in the spring.

Victim Services volunteers provide emotional support, crisis intervention and referral information to victims of crime at the scene, during evening hours. Volunteers provide support to victims who may have been involved in domestic violence, sexual assault, robberies, assaults, motor vehicle accidents, etc.

  • Attend meetings and training sessions
  • Learn about supports in the community and provide referrals
  • Work with a partner to assist citizens in crisis situations
  • Take notes and forward information to Victim Services staff
Location:
  • Based in Dartmouth, travel throughout metro Halifax.
Qualifications:
  • 19 years of age or older
  • Experience providing listening support to clients in a human services capacity
  • Valid Nova Scotia Driver’s Licence
  • Candidates must have reliable transportation to and from the Dartmouth police office due to late evenings and no available public transportation
  • Good driving record
  • Computer savvy
  • Able to attend training, meetings and events
  • Able to make a minimum one-year commitment.
Knowledge and Attributes:
  • Mature with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to adapt in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment
  • Self-motivated, responsible and reliable
  • Ability to follow established procedures
Candidates being considered for Victim Services volunteers must successfully meet the security clearance requirements administered by Halifax Regional Police.

Submission requirements: Please include a cover letter and a resume outlining both paid and unpaid (volunteer) experience in your résumé.

CLOSING DATE: Posting open until positions are filled.

Candidates must have an active email account. Correspondence regarding the status of your application will be sent via email throughout the selection process.

Selection processes for volunteer programs are held on an as needed basis. Candidates' applications will be held on file and reviewed at the next available selection process. Applications for volunteer positions are retained on file for a period of one-year.
