Job Description Summary
To assist in conducting ongoing experiments, participant recruitment, study coordination, and overall organization for ongoing research studies. Position is a term position, subject to grand funding availability.
Organizational Status
Reports directly to the Program Director, Dr. Michael Hunt.
Work Performed
- Planning and performing experiments, utilizing complex procedures or techniques, troubleshooting problems, collecting, recording, analyzing, and interpreting experimental results.
- Providing training to undergraduate students, new and lower-level technicians, in the use of equipment, techniques, and procedures.
- Assisting senior-level staff with the design of experiments and / or development of new techniques for laboratories or facilities.
- Assisting with analysis and interpretation of experiment results or research data by performing tasks such as assembly, compilation, and summary of statistical and other data.
- Setting up, testing, operating, and maintaining common laboratory and other equipment.
- Recruiting study participants, liaising with research participants to develop relationships.
- Coordinating subject testing times, including (but not limited to) clinical visits, training sessions, and laboratory mobility testing.
- Mailing, receiving, tracking questionnaires.
- Compiling and tracking agency contact information.
- Entering data from questionnaires using computer software; maintaining databases.
- Maintaining participant lists (creating folders and / or updating information on existing spreadsheets).
- Administering questionnaires from a script and recording responses.
- Assisting graduate students with coordination of experiments.
- Data quality assurance, data entry.
- Photocopying and preparing forms.
Consequence of Error / Judgement
Inappropriate judgment would compromise the quality of research studies and related data acquisition, and the reporting of research outcomes, affecting the credibility and reputations of the Principal Investigator(s), the Centres, the Department, and UBC.
Supervision Received
Works independently in consultation with the research team, under the direction of the Program Director, Dr. Michael Hunt.
Supervision Given
May oversee and direct the work of one or two employees at lower classifications. The position is responsible for the accuracy, production, and control of the work unit.

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or Graduation from a technical college or institute. A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a health-related discipline.Minimum of 3 years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.Minimum of three years of related experience in a university health research laboratory, or with direct experience in study coordination.Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.Ability to effectively use computers and software at an advanced level (e.g., databases, email, MS Word, MS Excel).Excellent oral communication skills.
