Overview
Our client is a well-established, highly respected leader in the North American asset-based trucking industry, specializing in overweight and over-dimensional freight. They are seeking a Director, Fleet Safety to join their senior leadership team in Vaughan, Ontario.
Reporting directly to the Vice President , this is a pivotal leadership role, overseeing the entire safety and compliance function across the organization. This includes ensuring compliance with Canadian and U.S. federal transportation regulations, developing and enforcing safety programs, and fostering a culture of continuous safety improvement throughout the company.
As a key member of the executive team, the Director will lead and mentor a team of safety professionals and act as a strategic partner in driving operational efficiency, regulatory excellence, and risk mitigation in a complex cross-border freight environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of safety policies, procedures, and systems aligned with industry best practices
- Ensure company-wide compliance with all applicable transportation safety regulations (e.g., FMCSA, DOT, CVOR, NSC)
- Monitor and analyze safety KPIs including CSA scores, HOS compliance, accident frequency, audit results, and driver performance
- Manage accident investigations, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and reporting
- Drive proactive safety training and engagement programs for drivers, operations staff, and field personnel
- Collaborate with operations, HR, and legal teams on risk management, claims, and disciplinary processes
- Serve as the company’s point of contact for external audits, regulatory agencies, and insurance partners
Required Qualifications
Minimum 7–10 years of progressive safety and compliance experience in the North American transportation industry, ideally with an asset-based, heavy haul, or over-dimensional carrierDeep knowledge of U.S. DOT / FMCSA and Canadian (CVOR, NSC, ELD / HOS) regulatory environmentsDemonstrated leadership and team management skills with experience leading safety teams across multiple terminals or regionsProven ability to lead incident investigations, audits, safety training, and corrective action programsExcellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skillsStrong analytical and problem-solving abilities with proficiency in safety-related data analysis and reporting toolsRelevant certifications such as CCHSC (Canadian Certified Health and Safety Consultant) , CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) , or CDS (Certified Director of Safety) are considered strong assetsWhat’s in it for You
