Role Overview
Reporting to the Safety, Health & Environmental Manager, this position involves 35% Safety Management and 65% Environmental Management.
The Safety & Environmental Coordinator will be responsible for working collaboratively with mill forces to develop, implement and promote safety and environmental best practices, programs and policies in accordance with regulations, legislation and corporate standards.
This position requires technical leadership to ensure the mill operates in compliance while targeting Zero Incidents . The ideal candidate requires well-established organizational skills, a high level of motivation and energy, excellent communication skills and a desire to work in a dynamic team environment.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the preparation of environmental reports and compliance documentation.
- Help organize and conduct environmental training programs for employees to enhance environmental awareness and compliance.
- Participate in environmental audits and inspections, addressing corrective actions as needed.
- Act as the main point of contact for the environment department with site personnel including contractors.
- Providing guidance and advice on environmental standards, commitments, guidelines, policies, procedures, and legislation.
- Assisting in environmental incident reporting (internal, regulatory, community), investigation, and identification and implementation of corrective actions.
- Assist in maintaining effective communication with regulatory agencies, stakeholders, and the community regarding environmental matters.
- Contribute to the identification of opportunities for improving safety / environmental performance.
- Escort regulatory agency personnel while on-site; facilitate on-site agency inspections and participate in pre- / post-inspection reviews and meetings.
- Stay up-to-date with emerging environmental trends and technologies to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Supervision of Fire Services.
- Support the development and implementation of the mill’s Safety and Environmental Management System.
- Minimize hazards by upholding principles in training, auditing and reporting.
- Conduct Accident / Incident Investigations.
- Resource person for the Emergency Response Plan.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
- Associate or Bachelor's degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, or a related field is required.
- Minimum of 5 years of related Environmental / Safety experience, preferably in the pulp and paper industry.
- Familiarity with federal and provincial environmental regulations and permitting processes.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within cross-functional teams.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
- SAP and Maximo experience would be considered an asset.
- Knowledge of Fire Services, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, Emergency Measures would be considered an asset.
