Your passion for nature and the great outdoors, coupled with a love of writing, communications, and connecting with people will lead the way.

You’ll work together to develop and plan communications, collaboration tools, and strategies. And, you’ll take the lead on media relations and communications activities.

Work environment
If your curiosity leads you to the most spectacular places and on adventures of a lifetime, working here fits into your story.
The parks in the Southwest Northwest Territories Field Unit have outstanding landscapes and plenty of opportunities for trying things you’ve maybe never done before.
Flying above epic landscapes in a small bush plane? That will happen here.
Walking across salt flats, unearthly boulder fields, and through extensive karst and cave networks? You got it.
Canoeing down wild rivers through the deepest canyons in Canada? Better start practicing.
Building authentic connections to each park by experiencing the land alongside local Dene and Metis folks? A guarantee.
You’ll work as part of an External Relations team that provides new media, marketing, design, communications, and stakeholder engagement support for the Southwest Northwest Territories Field Unit (SWNWT FU). The field unit includes FOUR remarkable parks in Southern NWT and northern Alberta : Nahanni National Park Reserve, Nááts'įhch'oh National Park Reserve, Thaidene Nene National Park Reserve, and Wood Buffalo National Park.
You’ll work primarily in an office environment but can expect multi-day work travel and one or two multi-day backcountry fieldwork trips per year into any of the four parks. This is a job for lovers of adventure.
You’ll be based in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, a community of 2,500 people. Fort Smith is connected to southern Canada by a year-round paved highway and is nestled on the eastern Alberta-NWT border. Major cities like Edmonton are a 13-hour drive away, while Yellowknife is a seven-hour drive north.
The town is in Treaty 8 territory and the traditional territory of Indigenous peoples of Salt River First Nation, Smith's Landing First Nation, and the Northwest Territory Metis Nation. The community is around 50% Indigenous peoples and 50% non-Indigenous people.
It’s a very recreation-oriented community, with hiking trails, a cross country ski club, a snowboarding hill, a golf course, superb kayaking and paddling venues on the Slave River and in Wood Buffalo National Park, which is a 20-minute drive to the southwest.
Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for protecting and presenting the outstanding natural and cultural resources found throughout Canada. We do this through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas, and national historic sites across Canada.
