Who- the Company :

This construction company has been around for a couple decades and has a robust business portfolio with a diversified customer base. The company has a tight-knit corporate culture with a family feel and entrepreneurial spirit, and many people have been with the company for a long time. The company is stable and successful, but they don’t want to rest on their laurels… the senior leadership has put a strategy in place to continue to grow the business in the coming years, through new construction offerings, improved processes, modernized systems, and better financial planning & analysis.

What- the Role :

Our client hiring for a new Controller who will report to the President (with support from a fractional CFO) and who will lead / mentor 3 direct reports in accounting.

Initially the Controller will take care of more “typical corporate accounting” such as consolidated financial statement preparation, month & quarter-end close, and overseeing Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivable… but with time, month over month, the Controller will take on more and more variety of tasks as they get to know the complexities of the business.

For example, the Controller will lead a financial system upgrade project (and future projects involving implementation of new systems for better analysis and automation) and will also take on financial planning & analysis.

The Controller will use their existing expertise in the construction sector to improve job costing, progress the accuracy of WIP (work in progress) reporting, advance the precision of revenue forecasting, and generally increase profitability across the business.

Who- the Candidate :

We are seeking a well-rounded accounting professional with at least 7 years of progressive work experience in most accounting & finance functions. Must have experience leading through change and transformation, and working towards corporate goals to increase profitability.

CPA designation is highly preferred, almost required (exceptions might be made for candidates who are actively pursuing CPA and who have very relevant experience in construction sector).

At least a couple years’ experience working in a fast-paced construction company is required (SWIM may also consider candidates who have relevant / transferable experience in other project-based sectors such as engineering, architecture, real estate development, utilities, etc.)

Strong systems skills are essential in this role- Excel proficiency and experience using various systems such as CRMs and job / project tracking software to track / source / analyze / report upon financial data. Ideally candidates will have experience leading mid-size financial system projects (upgrades, conversions, implementations).

Candidates must be analytical and inquisitive , with the desire to learn the business inside & out and to support strategic business decisions through their analytical findings.

Experience mentoring and leading a team of 2 to 4 direct reports is highly preferred.

Experience reporting into CFO and / or President and / or Business Owner / Founder is preferred.

Experience in an entrepreneurial owner-operated mid-size company is preferred.

Based full-time in a beautiful corporate building in Delta, BC . The office environment is busy, welcoming, and upbeat, with employees working in corporate, project management, and construction functions.

How Much :

Base salary commensurate with accounting experience, skills, and education, plus a competitive performance-based bonus (tied to achievement of individual, team, and corporate OKRs), a health-spending accounting, CPA support, 4 weeks paid vacation, benefits, etc.

The salary range is commensurate with experience (team management, CPA designation, years of experience in accounting and in construction sector, etc.) and is in the range of $115,000 to around $135,000 (again, plus bonus).
