Participate in weekly, monthly or scheduled meetings of the Civil Construction Department team to review Department initiatives, priorities, upcoming projects, progress on existing estimates, estimating schedule, and status of bid projects
Stay abreast of current developments and trends in all relevant technical / professional knowledge areas
Build an expert level of knowledge and understanding of various construction contract formats; trade knowledge; construction materials and processes; equipment productivity; bonding & insurance costs and conditions; regulatory codes; OH&S; as well as client requirements (i.e. Mining firms)
Establish and maintains relationships with strategic sub-contractors and suppliers
Receive estimating assignments from Estimating Manager; participate in a preliminary project discussion with Estimating Manager and / or Director, Civil Construction to review scope of work and closing date, and Director’s recommendations on estimating approach, degree of complexity, and level of competition with the project
Conduct a detailed review of all project contract documentation, drawings and specifications, site conditions, existing structures, etc.
Determine if a pre-bid job site visit is necessary and if any demolition / blasting is required
Utilize and mark up a set of tender drawings for estimate take-off and calculations
Determine the requirement for key sub-contractor involvement to bid / construct the scope of work and identify prospective bidders
Secure all necessary project bonding / insurance / etc. costs for inclusion in estimate
Review the project scope to identify any specialty materials and equipment required and solicit pricing from suppliers
Prepare a project schedule to identify key milestones, dates and completion timeframe
Prepare all project soft costs, i.e. : mobilization / demob; surveying; project management time; safety program implementation; equipment movement; travel costs; camp costs; lifting equipment as required; tool costs, job shack & site office costs including phone / fax, etc.
Review all quotations from suppliers / sub-contractors
Prepare draft of bid letter and review with Estimating Manager for approval
Upon contract award, attend project start-up meeting
Maintain strong working knowledge of the BC Building Code, Master Municipal Construction Documents (MMCD) and Canadian Construction Association standards
Qualifications :
10+ years experience in the construction industry with at least 5+ years in an Estimator role
Proven experience in a supervising Junior Estimators
In-depth knowledge of construction processes, BC codes, and regulations
Strong financial acumen with experience managing budgets and financial performance
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Demonstrated ability to build and maintain client relationships
Strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities
Professional certification or licensure in a relevant field is a plus
