Vice President, Civil Engineering
At VIA HFR, we are re-imagining passenger rail service on behalf of the Government of Canada! Our goal is to create a new sustainable train network that will run faster, more often, and will be more reliable between Toronto and Québec City.
The HFR project is Canada's largest infrastructure project in generations.We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Vice President to oversee the civil engineering activities of the HFR Project.
Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Project Management, this position requires a deep understanding of civil engineering design and construction, exceptional analytical and collaboration abilities, ensuring the successful development and delivery of the project within scope, budget, and schedule.
The responsibilitiesProvide strategic direction and leadership for all civil engineering aspects of the project.Build and lead a team of civil engineers, architects, and other professionals to ensure project goals are met within budget and schedule.
Collaborate with the Private Development Partner for the planning and design of civil structures for the railway project, including the geotechnical activities, bridges, roads, tunnels, stations, and other infrastructures.
Oversee the design development, review, and approval process for civil engineering components, including alignments, bridges, tunnels, and stations.
Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, codes, and standards related to civil engineering and construction.Develop and manage cost estimates for civil engineering activities, including cost estimation, tracking, and control measures.
Identify potential project-related risks and develop mitigation strategies to minimize project disruptions.Implement quality assurance measures to ensure that civil engineering work meets industry standards and project requirements.
Work closely with construction teams to monitor progress, resolve issues, and ensure construction activities align with design specifications.
Drive innovation and sustainability initiatives within the civil engineering scope, incorporating best practices and new technologies.
Build strong relationships with key stakeholders to ensure alignment and support for project objectives.Manage and mentor a team of project controls professionals, providing guidance, support, and training to enhance their skills and capabilities.
Foster a collaborative and high-performing team culture.The requirementsBachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a related field (advanced degree preferred).
Professional engineer status.An additional qualification in project management is desirable.Minimum of 15 years of experience in the design and development of linear projects.
Proven experience in project leadership roles, particularly in large-scale infrastructure projects such as rail, transportation, or construction projects.
Excellent leadership and collaboration skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate teams to achieve project goals and objectives.
Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively at all levels of the organization.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
Being fluent in both Canadian official languages is desirable.Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with a focus on innovation, creativity, and continuous improvement.
