Shift timings : Monday - Friday 08 : 00 to 16 : 00

Fire Prevention Specialist is a critical member of the Fire Prevention Team and are responsible for all aspects of fire prevention and education throughout the duration of their shift. The FPS is required to work at both the Cambridge and Woodstock locations.

FPS reports directly to the Security Assistant Manager (SAM) and are responsible for the following :

Life Safety Inspections :

  • Inspection, maintenance, and use of personal protective equipment including Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), identifying and reporting all deficiencies.
  • Basic maintenance of security patrol vehicles and reporting all deficiencies.

Fire Prevention :

  • Maintain operational knowledge of Client Fire Prevention Standard and relevant building and fire codes and enforce these codes and standards.
  • Evaluates, establish, and enforce fire and life safety plans and conduct & observe fire evacuation drills.
  • Delivers internal training to Securitas and Client personnel to raise awareness of fire prevention programs and activities.
  • Provides technical support and training for employee personnel.
  • Required to attend, and successfully complete, any training required by Client or designate which may be internal, off site or out of City.
  • Conduct daily checks of CO2 and sprinkler riser systems.
  • Conduct monthly checks of life safety devices as assigned by the S / AM.
  • Complete fire safety shop audits and identify fire / safety concerns and report to confirm corrective action to eliminate hazards and follow up to confirm compliance.
  • Identify, investigate, and report fire / safety hazards coordinating with SAM, Health & Safety or Facilities Engineering for repairs.
  • Maintain operational knowledge of the mechanics and locations of the fire suppression systems on site.
  • Maintain operational knowledge of sprinkler system mechanics to identify trouble signals, alarm signals, leaks and sprinkler flows on any given system.
  • Maintain understanding of the types of sprinkler systems at Client Facility and where they are in any given shop.
  • Fire Watch Duties : Ensure adequate fire extinguishing equipment is readily accessible, conduct continuous patrols of effected areas and be in constant radio contact with the Communications Team Member.
  • Responsible for inspecting the North & South Paint and Plastics CO2 systems and reporting all deficiencies (Specific to Cambridge site).
  • Hot Work :

  • Maintain operational knowledge of Client Hot Work Standard and policies for the issuance of Hot Work Permits [HWPs].
  • Ensure all hot work-related equipment, compressed gas cylinders and fire extinguishers comply with the Client Contractor Safety Blue Book, relevant Client policies, security / environmental requirements, the Ontario Fire Code and other related regulations. Report all violations for corrective action to repair or replace defective equipment.
  • Complete comprehensive assessment of hot work areas to ensure sufficient countermeasures are in place surrounding combustibles and risk of fires.
  • Issue HWPs and continuously monitor all hot work activity to ensure compliance.
  • HWP Violations : Ensure Hot Work is stopped, communicate hazard with hot work operator / job leader. Take immediate corrective action to eliminate hazard. Once hazard has been eliminated Hot Work will re-commence, if hazard persists HWP will be revoked.
  • Impairment of Fire Detection devices for Hot Work and maintenance : Ensure Team Members & or Contractors have knowledge of impairments and or telephone to dial the emergency extension to alarm a fire situation.
  • Conduct regular Hot Work training for FPIs.
  • Additional duties :

  • Participate in weekly / monthly training under direction of the SAM to maintain competency levels.
  • Comply and promote all current Post Orders, Standard Operating procedures (SOPs), Emergency Response SOPs, Client Fire Prevention Standards, Hot Work Standards including all Client Policies.
  • Security support as required and directed by the SAM.
  • Mentor and training of new FPIs.
  • Complete all training, projects, and additional duties as directed by Securitas Management.
  • Qualifications :
  • Grade 12.
  • Valid Ontario Security Guard License.
  • Valid G class Driver's License.
  • NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector and Plan Examiner Level I & II. Includes of all the Ontario Fire College supplemental courses prescribed by the OFMEM including, NFPA 472 or 1072 Awareness Level, Legislation, Part 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 & 9, and Courtroom Procedures
  • NFPA 1035 - Fire and Life Safety Educator Levels I and II
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Supplemental course in Commercial Cooking Suppression Equipment.
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Building Code Act and regulation considered an asset. For example, possess a BCIN with qualifications in Part 3 Fire Protection, Occupant Safety and Accessibility;
  • Experience with code enforcement and courtroom procedures would be considered an asset.
  • Requirements :

  • Must be able to display clear and quick thinking to resolve problems whilst being able to withstand stress and stay calm under pressure.
  • Must Successfully pass SCBA Fit Testing.
  • Must be able to complete all Client FPI required training.
  • Speak, read and write English fluently, and communicate clearly under demanding conditions.
  • Competent in the use of Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Working knowledge of the following legislation, regulations, standards, or requirements :
