The Opportunity

We are looking for a Field Safety Specialist to join our Corporate Safety team. As part of a team, the successful candidate will work with Nova Scotia Power management, IBEW, and employees to implement safety plans while supporting our corporate commitment to attaining safety excellence.

Key elements of this role include

The successful candidate is responsible for applying the appropriate measure of direction and support based upon Nova Scotia Power health and safety objectives. You will work with field and corporate office personnel to improve safety performance. Responsibilities include but are not limited to :

  • Work toward an integrated approach to safety through continuous improvement of systems and processes.
  • Support roll out of strategic safety initiatives including Serious Injury & Fatality (SIF) prevention, focusing on STKY (stuff that can kill you) and psychological health and safety.
  • Work closely with management and the IBEW in developing Safe Work Practices.
  • Act as a liaison with regulatory agencies.
  • Perform field safety observations, and provide feedback to the field.
  • Measure the compliance of your assigned operating area with the requirements of the Safety Program through auditing.
  • Provide coaching and advise on safety related issues to all levels of the business.
  • Ensure the Safety Program meets or exceeds regulatory requirements.
  • Assist managers, supervisors and frontline employees to understand and apply interpretations of safety regulations, policies, and rules.
  • Provide technical advice as it relates to safety.
  • Track safety performance and identify trends, communicate trends with supervisors in your area.
  • Facilitate meetings concerning safety initiatives.
  • Provide and develop safety related education to meet your customer’s needs.
  • Attend management team meetings to ensure a consistent message is delivered.
  • Assist JOHSC investigation teams in determining immediate and root factors associated with an incident and ensuring appropriate corrective actions are implemented.
  • Work with other utilities and industries to improve safety in the workplace.
  • Travel throughout the Northeast Territory with a focus on Energy Delivery in Guysborough, Goshen, Antigonish, Stellarton, Truro and Amherst and with a Power Production focus at The Trenton Generating Station.

These skills will make you successful

  • Possesses a degree / diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field.
  • Has a demonstrated passion for safety and experience working with world class safety programs.
  • Is a self‑motivator with demonstrated experience working independently and prefers an industrial environment, preferably within the transmission and distribution of an electrical utility.
  • A CRSP / CRST designation or working toward it would be considered a definite asset.
  • Exemplary relationship building, communication, and motivational skills, enabling the building and maintaining of working relationships with teams within Nova Scotia Power and its operating areas.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness as a team leader and the ability to cross organizational boundaries to work effectively as part of an integrated team.
  • Has a current, valid driver’s license and is willing to travel within and outside the province as required. The preferred applicant should be willing to relocate if needed.
  • This position is considered a safety sensitive position. As such, the successful candidate must comply with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Policy which requires a confidential pre‑employment alcohol and drug test in accordance with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Procedure.
