Registered Nurse
Summary of responsibilities
The Mental Health Crisis Nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive urgent / emergent mental health services to clients, including psychosocial assessment, crisis intervention and urgent follow-up, as well as consultation and education to other staff, professionals and community agencies.
This is specialized mental health co-response practice with the Ontario Provincial Police. Employees provide rapid, accurate and effective assessment, interventions, recommendations regarding disposition, referral to community resources, and supportive consultation to community agencies, police departments and families as well as embody a culture of caregiver inclusion in the patient’s plan of care.
Work is performed with considerable independent judgement within approved policies and procedures.
Requirements of the job
- Certificate of Registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Certified in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing
- Minimum three year’s working in a community setting offering mobile crisis services, in collaboration with police and / or emergency responders to assess and manage interventions, as well as knowledge of the criminal justice system
- Knowledge and practice of short-term urgent response, psychosocial rehabilitation approach and advanced clinical, crisis and assessment skills are essential
- Experience working with individuals living with serious mental illness, substance use issue, addiction, neurodevelopment disability, dementia and / or other conditions is essential
- Demonstrate ability to de-escalate crisis situations using trauma-informed and culturally-responsive techniques
- Knowledge of local mental health, addictions and social service providers is essential, as well as awareness of provincial mental health, addictions and social service systems
- Current Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support
- Current certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public and co-workers
- Ability and knowledge on how to use Microsoft Windows, Word, CRMS, email and the internet
- Excellent interpersonal / communication skills (oral and written) and organizational / teaching skills
- Solid understanding of substance abuse
- Valid driver's license
- Demonstrated commitment to patient safety
- Demonstrated regular, punctual attendance
- Functional level in both official languages (oral and written in English; oral in French and testing completed)
