Scope
Reporting to the Street Operations manager this position performs manual and skilled tasks involving considerable physical effort in performing a variety of construction and maintenance related to roads, lanes, sidewalks, pipes, and sewers.
Responsibilities
- Locates, reads and records water consumption on domestic and commercial properties on a regular basis.
- Records information pertaining to water meter readings, repairs, materials used and efficiency of the meter.
- Assembles pipes together ensuring that tees, bends, crosses, valves and services or related fittings are properly installed.
- Works with map books and construction drawings.
- Monitors water, sewer and drainage pump stations.
- Maintains records, logbooks and activity sheets as required.
- Attends to sanitary sewer / drainage backups and performs preliminary work to resolve the problem.
- Performs specific maintenance duties on pumping stations.
- Shuts off and opens water services and mains.
- Responds to downed / damaged stop signs and records information pertaining to them and other safety devices.
- Refuels machines.
- Responds to motor vehicle accidents and if necessary erects barricades on site.
- Cleans and secures work area by shoveling and sweeping.
- Uses a variety of hand and power tools.
- Responds to trouble calls and inquiries from the public.
- Assists crew members in performing their duties.
- Drives a City vehicle to and from job sites. Qualifications
- Communicates effectively both orally and in writing.
- Understands and effectively carries out oral and written instructions.
- Exercises independence of judgment and initiative in performing the duties of the position.
- Understands figures and numbers, reads construction drawings and maps of underground services, utilities, etc.
- Maintains records.
- Knowledge of methods, techniques, hand / power tools, and equipment used in Operations construction and maintenance.
- Knowledge of Surrey's road system.
- Knowledge of vacusan system.
- Knowledge of Surrey's policies, procedures and standards.
- Knowledge of applicable safety regulations.
Applicants will possess the following minimum qualifications :
- Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.
- Experience and training in Engineering Operations, maintenance and construction.
- A valid and unrestricted drivers license with a safe driving record. Other Information
