Construction Technologist (Oshawa)

The Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority (HOPA Ports) is seeking a driven, solution-focused and dynamic individual to join our Operations team.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

This is an exciting role for a smart, detailed-oriented, problem-solver. Reporting to the Manager, Technical Projects, the Construction Technologist will provide support in gathering information, administering construction contracts, and developing technical documents, drawings and reports.

This position is expected to commence early August 2024.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES including but not limited to :

Project Management Support

• Provide support in the implementation of the capital and major maintenance projects.
• Complete field surveys, inspections, and reports.
• Liaise with HOPA tenants and other stakeholders.
• Procurement of engineering proposals and tendering of construction projects.
• Construction Coordination including inspection for conformance and compliance with project documents and contracts; project documentation;

quantity tracking, manage and negotiate changes to RFI.

Drafting and design drawings and sketches to communicate plans.

Documentation

• Prepare Reports, memoranda, and information papers by collecting historical costing / design data ad staying updated on design specifications, standards and construction cost trends.
• Collect and manage as-constructed and background information through the maintenance of the internal engineering library and drawings catalogue.
• Prepare and / or review organized and accurate detailed drawings and supporting technical documentation, staying updated on computer software, drafting methods, surveying methods, technology, and procedures.
• Stay current with trends in costing, scheduling, material specifications, and best management practices in the engineering and construction industry.
• Proactively seeks and conducts thorough research, employs probing questions to uncover root issues and diverse perspectives, and resolves disputes while providing well-informed solutions.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

• Nearing graduation or recent graduate of an accredited Engineering Technology or Construction Management program
• AutoCAD Civil 3D
• Priority will be given to candidates who have experience with Bathymetric and GPS Surveying Equipment and Software
• Ability to analyze and understand project financials.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

• Transportation / shipping industry experience considered an asset.
• Skilled in MS Office applications including Microsoft Project, Excel, Outlook
• Strong attention to detail
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
• Valid class G driver’s license
• Must be able to work well independently or in a team environment.

Salary, Bonus & Benefits

Starting salary of $55,000 - $60,000; commensurate with experience.

This role is primarily based in Oshawa and may require occasional travel to our facilities in Hamilton and Niagara.
