Job description

Reporting to the Manager, Welding Engineering, the Engineer, Welding is responsible for providing welding engineering support to all vessel construction activities at Vancouver Shipyards. This includes Joint Support Ship for Royal Canadian Navy, future Coast Guard vessels including Polar Icebreaker new build work. This position oversees development and qualification of all welding procedures. The Welding Engineer supports Detail Design, Production, Welding QC, Procurement, PMO and Engineering in improving welding quality by applying the optimum processes and techniques.

Note : Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 50 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver, BC.

What you’ll do

  • Leads the welding process development and produces applicable documentation. Optimizes and enhances underperforming weld processes.
  • Implements the traditional / novel welding processes and equipment.
  • Performs failure analysis as required and provides solutions to welding problems with a high degree of complexity.
  • Creates technical documents such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Work Instructions (WI) and forms.
  • Implements various material, welding and testing codes and standards (. ISO, Lloyds, DNV-GL, CSA, ASME, AWS, .
  • Reviews subcontractors’ welding procedures, processes and documentation including welding inspections reports.
  • Conducts welding related quality control audits at supplier’s sites or assists with welding issues.
  • Coordinates and monitors Procedure Qualification Record tests (including preparing WPS / PQR paperwork)
  • Builds relationships with suppliers, customers and Classification societies and liaises with other departments to improve weld quality.
  • Positively liaising with other departments to improve welding quality.
  • Ensures project specific contractual weld requirements are identified and addressed.
  • Advises on the purchase of new equipment and creates the technical specification.
  • Prepares technical papers for publication
  • Supports tasks and projects with the Welding Centre of Excellence
  • Researches new welding technologies and trends and evaluates their application to improve or remedy existing welding processes.
  • Performs experimental welding to evaluate new equipment, technologies, and techniques, with the aim of introducing them into Seaspan.
  • Contributes to variety of Research and Development (R&D) projects.
  • Attends formal inspections with customers and regulatory bodies. Documents all non-conformities and provides results to responsible supervisors and the Quality Department.
  • Performs daily in-process quality inspections of trade specific work. Documents and communicates results to responsible supervisors.
  • Conducts new construction model / drawing reviews from welding specialist perspective and provide supports to Design / Engineering teams
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

What you’ll bring

  • EGBC . status.
  • A degree in Welding Engineering, or Metallurgy (or equivalent)
  • Minimum 4 years of post-secondary experience in welding engineering in a large manufacturing environment, preferably in the shipbuilding industry.
  • CSA W178.2 Level 1 or 2 Welding Inspector certification (or international equivalent such as AWS CWI) is an asset
  • Extensive knowledge of shipbuilding welding procedures including at a minimum shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), flux core arc welding (FCAW), metal core arc welding (MCAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), submerged arc welding (SAW), gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), and stud welding.
  • Knowledge of International, Class and Canadian material, welding and testing codes, rules and standards (. ISO, Lloyds, DNV-GL, CSA, ASME, ASTM, AWS,
  • Knowledge of welding procedures (PQR, WPS and WPDS).
  • Ability to run a welding applications lab.
  • Demonstrated competence in evaluating weld test specimens including bend tests, macro-etch specimens, tensile tests, Charpy V-notch, etc.
  • Must have demonstrable experience in Continuous Improvement functions.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office suite, Replicon and JD Edwards P2P.
  • Ability to read and interpret specifications, drawings and 3D models.
  • Ability to develop welding procedures.
  • Solid understanding of quality control and inspection procedures
  • Proven ability to develop Quality Plans and Inspection and Test Plans
  • Strong technical skills including an understanding of quality techniques and their application
  • Ability to obtain Industrial Security

    The estimated salary for this position is $99,000-$121,000. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
