Community Legal Worker / Community Organizer / Project Lead (13 month contract)
This role has two major components eviction prevention and supporting survivors of gender-based violence.
The successful candidate for this position will be supporting survivors of intimate partner violence and sexual assault as they navigate the criminal justice system.
This direct client support can include but is not limited to system navigation, referrals, information provision, limited legal advice under the supervision of a lawyer, and ancillary support in poverty law-related matters such as social assistance, housing, and human rights.
In addition to direct client support, the successful candidate will be responsible for conducting public outreach activities such as public legal education.
The successful candidate for this position will also be participate in eviction prevention work through activities such as public legal education, production of legal education materials, mobile clinics, and related activities under the supervision of a lawyer where appropriate.
Qualifications include :
- Experience in supporting survivors of gender-based violence
- Demonstrated ability to work with people in crisis in a trauma-informed manner
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Skills in communicating complex concepts in plain language
- A related University or College qualification in the social services and / or legal field and / or relevant work experience
The following would be definite assets for the position :
- Understanding of community based legal services
- Understanding of the legal system
- Previous experience in community development, law reform and public legal education
- A high level of computer literacy
- Law Society of Ontario License (paralegal or lawyer) is an asset but not required
This is a full time (35 hours per week) contract position covering a maternity / parental leave starting July 1 2024 and concluding in July 31 2025.
- Salary range is $70,000.00 $76,000.00 depending on relevant experience.
