ProgramOverview

The Mental Health Therapist works in collaboration with other professionals within a multidisciplinary team to provide 1 : 1 therapy and class facilitation services to patients 14 and up of the Edmonton North Primary Care Network (PCN).

Position

The Mental Health Therapist functions as a secondary referral in a stepped care approach to facilitate the identification and delivery of evidence based 1 : 1 psychotherapeutic treatment that would not otherwise be available to patients with an identified need for psychotherapy.

The PCN’S service model is principled on primary care-oriented practice and a short-term (up to 12 session) therapy model.

Position’s key responsibilities include :

  • Working to full scope of practice to provide mental health assessments and individual psychotherapy using a broad range of evidence-based treatment modalities.
  • Making autonomous decisions in coordinating care and determiningan appropriate treatment plan for referred clients.
  • Develop, support, and maintain a good understanding of the Behavioural Health Consultant model and work in collaboration with them to ensure the mental health needs of clients are met.
  • Maintaining accurate records with Electronic Medical Record, including the documentation and communication of a client’s visits with the client’s physician, timely completion and following up with the referring BHC on completion of care or in case of client non- attendance.
  • Facilitating group training.
  • Assisting in the development of policy and procedures relevant to this position.
  • Participating in establishing health promotion programs appropriate to the needs of the Edmonton North population.
  • Collaborate and support the other Mental Health Therapists, interdisciplinary team members, departments, and Mental Health Manager or Team Lead as requested or required.
  • Supporting patients by linking them to key health care programs, providers, community agencies or resources as appropriate.

Report to

Manager, Clinical Services

Education

  • Master’s degree in psychology, Counselling, or Social Work (clinical specialization).
  • Active professional registration and in good standing with CAP or an accredited Association under Health Professions Act (proof of active registration and practice is required).
  • Certification in a core suite of evidence based therapeutic modalities that can be applied to a variety of common referral reasons (Any of EMDR, GOTTMAN, EFT, DBT, PE, CPT).

Experience

  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience providing individual and group therapy in a community agency.
  • Cultural competence and experience working with diverse cultural backgrounds and related language needs.
  • Additional training in other modalities such as EMDR would be an asset.
  • Working knowledge of the DSM-5, trauma informed care and concurrent disorders.
  • Experience working with children, youths, adults and couples.

  • Strong assessment, and risk assessment skills.
  • Strong communication skills, adaptability, and integrity.
  • Ability to manage time effectively, set priorities to meet various deadlines and maintain a flexible schedule.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, organizational skills, and ability to prioritize.

Work Week

38.75 hrs / week with the requirement of an evening shift per week (11 : 45a.m.- 08 : 00p.m.) or as operationally required.
