The Mactaquac Generating Station, which began generating electricity in 1968, has been affected by alkali‑aggregate reaction (AAR). NB Power is proposing a project to ensure the station can operate to its intended 100‑year lifespan with a modified approach to maintenance, and adjusting and replacing equipment and concrete over time.
Engineer V – Project Lead
As part of the Mactaquac Life Achievement Project, the Engineer V will lead a team of engineers responsible for all aspects of design and construction of project work. This includes ensuring NB Power is prepared to complete the preliminary designs required and overseeing and coordinating all design and construction work performed by external consultants to ensure safety, environment, quality, efficiency, and compliance with organizational standards.
Key Functions – Mechanical Engineering
- Lead a team of discipline‑specific engineers while engaging stakeholders across all project phases, ensuring technical expertise is applied from planning through close‑out.
- Review designs and oversee installation and commissioning of turbines, hydraulic gates, cranes, and mechanical systems, weighing alternatives and approving consultant‑provided design solutions on behalf of NB Power.
- Provide field support during construction by managing RFIs, monitoring contractor quality, adapting to changed conditions, and delivering recommendations on multidisciplinary technical issues to senior project leadership for resolution.
Key Functions – Civil Engineering
Lead a team of discipline‑specific engineers while engaging stakeholders across all project phases, ensuring technical expertise is applied from planning through close‑out.Review designs and oversee the design and construction of reinforced concrete, structural steel, earthworks, and dam‑related activities, applying geotechnical insights and mitigation strategies for AAR concrete effects, weighing alternatives and approving consultant‑provided solutions on behalf of NB Power.Provide field support during construction by managing RFIs, monitoring contractor quality, adapting to changed conditions, and delivering recommendations on multidisciplinary technical issues to senior project leadership for resolution.Key Functions – Electrical Engineering
Lead a team of discipline‑specific engineers while engaging stakeholders across all project phases, ensuring technical expertise is applied from planning through close‑out.Review designs and lead the implementation and commissioning of electrical distribution and control systems, balance‑of‑plant equipment, SCADA, generator protection, and communications, weighing alternatives and approving consultant‑provided solutions on behalf of NB Power.Contribute to hydroelectric equipment integration, ensuring safe and efficient operation from design through commissioning.Provide field support during construction by managing RFIs, monitoring contractor quality, adapting to changed conditions, and delivering recommendations on multidisciplinary technical issues to senior project leadership for resolution.Ideal Candidate – General Requirements
Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Electrical Engineering.Registered Professional Engineer licensed in New Brunswick or eligible for immediate transfer.Eight years of experience with large hydraulic gate design and installation, large cranes, turbines, balance‑of‑plant mechanical systems, reinforced concrete and structural steel design, or AC / DC electrical distribution and control systems.Experience in mega‑projects spanning planning, detailed design, execution, and close‑out phases.Demonstrated leadership of discipline‑specific engineering teams.Proficient in responding to RFIs, managing contractor quality programs, handling changed conditions, and knowledge of relevant regulations, standards, and industry best practices.Assets
Turbine design and installation experience.Penstock or large diameter piping and welding programs.Earthworks and embankment dam design and construction.Hydroelectric generation equipment experience (e.g., generators).Experience with AAR concrete effects on mechanical, civil, or electrical equipment.Brownfield or overhaul project experience.Work Location
During the initial phase of the project, positions will be based at Head Office. As the project advances, the primary work location will transition to the Mactaquac Generating Station.
