Job Description

The Assistant Chief Power Engineer will oversee and monitor the operation and maintenance of the boilers, boiler room, process and wastewater, air compressor, Nitrogen generation, steam distribution and other related equipment. This position will also act as a lead to oversee the work performed by the Power Engineers onsite.

Primary Responsibilities / Essential Functions

  • Assist the Chief Power Engineer to ensure all pressure vessel operations, repairs, and alterations follow the TSASK Boiler and Pressure Vessel regulations, and assume the duties of the Chief Power Engineer as required.
  • Provide technical assistance and supervision of the utilities department and other LDC departments as needed.
  • Manage chemical inventories, including ordering and cycle counting.
  • Assist in the scheduling of maintenance of equipment.
  • Provide mentorship, scheduling, work assignments, training and evaluation of 2nd and 3rd Class shift engineers.
  • Review meter and gauge readings and the operating condition of equipment.
  • Develop and execute operational procedures for operations, maintenance, safety, Quality & Food Safety etc.
  • Use blueprints, diagrams, schematic drawings, and maintenance manuals to locate sources and diagnose problems with electrical, plumbing, and mechanical equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and direct service calls to Power Engineers and other maintenance personnel, including contracted vendors.
  • Ensure staff perform work safely and in compliance with appropriate codes and regulations.
  • Review repair work to check for completeness.
  • Order supplies, parts, and equipment necessary for operation and maintenance activities.
  • Complete regular inspections and oversee equipment maintenance records / reports.
  • Train and monitor competency of staff in the Power Engineer and review task performance.
  • Perform other related duties, as required.

Experience

  • Must be certified as a 2nd Class Power Engineer in the province of Saskatchewan, with an interest to become a 1st Class Power Engineer.
  • Must have a minimum of 3 years of previous work experience with large-size industrial boilers and wastewater operations.
  • Must have previous work experience with various boiler manufacturers, models, styles, operation of high- and low-pressure steam boilers, Process and Wastewater, air compressor, Nitrogen generation, steam distribution and other related equipment.
  • Must have previous experience training, leading and reviewing the work of others.
  • Refrigeration ticket is preferred.
  • Able to work on weekends, holidays, and at odd or irregular hours.
  • Must have a keen interest in continual improvement and lean work practices.
  • Strong knowledge of safety precautions and hazards of pressure vessels and lines.
  • Familiar with appropriate Federal and Provincial requirements for handling hazardous chemicals, as well as all other requirements of regulations affecting the activities, procedures, and policies surrounding the work.
  • Previous aptitude with common computer systems and applications such as Microsoft Office Suite, CMMS, etc.
  • Interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematic drawings, and maintenance manuals.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, at all levels, including colleagues, the public, and representatives of other agencies.
  • Respond quickly and appropriately in an emergency.
  • Maintain accurate records and write reports.
  • Work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Able to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, effective oral and written communication skills, and basic numerical skills are required.
  • Well-organized, self-motivated and action-oriented and able to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Able to climb stairs and ladders as well as work at heights; manage confined space entry, withstand extended periods of walking and standing; move manufacturing materials, products and equipment of 50 pounds or more which requires regular bending and lifting; push, pull, grasp, and perform manual tasks, as necessary.
