GENERAL PURPOSE OF THIS JOB (Summary)
Working in coordination with the Design Project Leader, Engineer of Record, and project stakeholders, the Senior Electrical Designer develops "Best for Project" electrical, automation, and communication system designs for permanent mine infrastructure and temporary sinking installations. The role emphasizes safe, operable, and constructible solutions for underground and surface mining facilities, with a focus on automation, instrumentation, communication, and power systems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
HEALTH AND SAFETY
- Work in full compliance with all Health and Safety rules and regulations for Cementation.
- Identify and report hazards and participate in safety huddles and incidents reviews.
- Ensure all electrical, automation, and communication designs adhere to applicable CSA Mining Standards, provincial mining regulations, and client H&S requirements.
GENERAL DUTIES AND CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

1. General
Design and drafting for permanent and temporary works related to the construction of underground mine shafts, facilities and infrastructure.Collaborate with Project Services and Operations to produce "Best For Project" designs that are safe, reflect the client's operability requirements first, and are constructible.To produce a deliverable that is on time, on budget and has the correct scope in accordance with the project requirements.2. Electrical, Automation & Communication Design
Develop electrical, automation, and communication system drawings for underground and surface mine infrastructure, including :Shaft sinking electrical systems
Hoist controls and shaft communication systemsUnderground substations and distribution networksMine-wide fiber, copper, and wireless communication systemsPLC / DCS / SCADA architectures, panel layouts, and instrumentation schematicsProduce P&IDs, loop diagrams, I / O lists, control narratives, network diagrams, and panel wiring drawings.Ensure designs reflect operational requirements, cybersecurity best practices (where applicable), and reliability appropriate for mining environments.Integrate power distribution, automation, instrumentation, and communication designs into multi‑discipline project 3D models.3. Drawing Production & Quality
Produce accurate drawings that clearly communicate design intent and meet Cementation Engineering Standards, codes, and client specifications.Check drawings for dimensional accuracy, correct interfaces, and compliance with mining electrical and communication standards.Develop finished drawings from conceptual notes with minimal supervision.Maintain consistent document control practices, file structures, and revision tracking.Understand and follow the guidelines from the Cementation Standards and Procedures Manual and be accountable for drawing production and quality.4. Collaboration & Project Coordination
Work closely with engineers, project managers, site personnel, and multi‑discipline designers to develop deliverables.Participate in design reviews, technical discussions, and project coordination meetings.Review and mark-up drawings for drafting and presentation purposesSupport tendering activities by creating conceptual layouts, automation architecture diagrams, quantity take‑offs, and estimates.Provide technical support to operations, construction teams, and clients during design development and execution.Assess project budgetary and schedule status and line up resources to ensure goals (project targets) are met.5. Field Support & Data Gathering
Conduct field visits to underground and surface mine sites to gather information, validate installations, and support as‑built documentation.Liaise with site personnel to resolve design issues, troubleshoot system concerns, and recommend solutions.6. Mentorship & Leadership
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior designers and drafters.Contribute to developing internal standards related to electrical, automation, and communication design.Develop positive client relationshipsTRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
Occasional travel to mine sites for design development, reviews, or field verification.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Secondary School Diploma required.Electrical Technician or Technologist diploma required.OACETT Registration is considered an assetEngineering Degree considered an asset.Minimum 7-10 years of drafting and design experience, with at least 2 years in mining electrical, automation, or communication design.Experience in underground mining, hoisting facilities, shaft sinking, or heavy industrial construction is preferred.SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES
