A volunteer for this position would complete a Dog Care Support Agreement with new clients. This intake process includes taking the dog on a appraisal walk, completing a health and behavioural assessment, and taking a photo of the dog. They would also accompany new dog walking volunteers on their first walk with a dog to review policies and rules.
The time commitment can vary; at times new clients are registered sporadically, at other times several will require services in a short time period. Volunteers should be comfortable visiting new clients on their own and asking questions about their situations and needs. They should have some experience with dogs, be reliable, have good interpersonal skills, and enjoy helping seniors with their dogs. A computer, printer and cell phone or digital camera, and an ability to scan documents would be helpful. An RCMP Criminal Record Check is required, but is not paid for by the agency. Training and supervision will be provided. For more information, contact Veronica via email : nanaimovc@elderdog.ca .
