Overview
As a member of the military, Geomatics Technicians capture, analyze, process, present, disseminate, and manage geospatial data to support the operations of the Canadian Government, especially the Navy, the Army, the Air Force, and Special Forces.
Geomatics Technicians are members of the Military Engineering Branch of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). Their primary responsibilities include :
Work environment
Geomatics Technicians are specialists who support all CAF exercises and operations, including those led by the Navy, Air Force, and Special Forces. They work mainly in office environments within Canada, using high-tech computer workstations and specialized software. They may be deployed internationally and participate in national and international exercises and training.
Entry plans
No prior work experience or related skills are required. The minimum education requirement is the completion of Grade 11 or Quebec Secondary 5, including Grade 11 Applied Math or Math 426 in Quebec. Foreign education may be accepted.
The Non-Commissioned Member Subsidized Training and Education Program (NCMSTEP) allows successful recruits to attend college while working for the CAF, with full salary and benefits, in exchange for service commitments.
Training
The initial training includes the Basic Military Qualification course at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, focusing on core military skills and physical fitness. Geomatics Technicians then attend the School of Military Mapping at Algonquin College, where they learn about :
