Behavioural Supports Ontario (BSO) has been implemented across Ontario since 2012 to support older adults with responsive behaviours. BSO’s three pillars are (1) System Coordination & Management; (2) Integrated Service Delivery : Intersectoral & Interdisciplinary; and (3) Knowledgeable Care Teams and Capacity Building. Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant BSO (HNHB BSO) consists of interprofessional teams across the health care continuum. The BSO Recreation Therapy position has been created to enhance and expand BSO teams. Direct support and accountability for this position will be provided by Extendicare Hamilton; indirect reporting and supports guided by HNHB BSO and Ontario Health West.
Core Qualifications
- Therapeutic Recreation degree and / or postgraduate therapeutic recreation diploma
- Membership in good standing with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO) and / or with Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association (CTRA)
- Registered Recreation Therapist (R / TRO) certification; or eligible to obtain registration with TRO

Relevant clinical experience (3–5 years as a Recreational Therapist) with older adults and care partners in long-term care and community settingsExperience in an interprofessional team; long-term care setting preferredExperience implementing quality improvement initiativesExperience supporting lived experience of older adults with dementia or responsive behaviours and their care partnersExperience with electronic documentation, including assessments and care planning functionsKnowledge
Knowledge of dementia, delirium, complex mental health, substance use, and other neurological conditions; understanding responsive behaviours and effects on care partnersAwareness of current research and best practices for the patient population and ability to apply knowledgeKnowledge of legislation and policies including LTC Homes Act, PHIPA (2004), Mental Health Act, and related lawsKnowledge of internal and external community resourcesShared Care Delivery
Patient-family-care partner focus aligned with the Mission, Vision, Values and goals of BSO, Extendicare Hamilton and partner agenciesPlan and implement individualized therapeutic recreation based on interest, need and ability; collaboration with primary care and clinical teamEnhance impact of BSO modalities (1 : 1 and group) to address and prevent responsive behavioursPromote brain health through engagement activities focusing on validation, success, and social stimulationCollaborate with care partners to find quality care solutionsSupport continuous improvement of Behavioural Support and organizational practicesFacilitate spread of improvement practices within internal teamsClinical Accountability
