Work Arrangements

The Therapeutic Recreation Department is seeking a contract faculty for the Winter 2025 academic term to teach THRT 1204 Principles and Practices of Health . Location of work is in-person at the Coquitlam Campus of Douglas College.

We are looking for an outstanding candidate who has the knowledge and expertise in therapeutic recreation to instruct this course. Further contracts may be awarded in the future.

The Role

The Department of Therapeutic Recreation is recognized as an innovative program leader with a strong academic and research-based curriculum that includes numerous opportunities for experiential learning in both the Diploma and Bachelor degree ( BTR ) programs. Courses in the department are taught both in person and online.

Graduates from the diploma and degree programs are career-ready, and some degree graduates continue into graduate programs. The Department of Therapeutic Recreation currently prepares BTR students for eligibility to become a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist.

Responsibilities

Faculty typically teach a range of academic and practicum / internship courses. As a faculty member, you will be required to instruct students, facilitate learning and evaluate student progress in therapeutic recreation and other college level courses.

You will plan, organize and manage learning activities and resources, provide academic advice to learners and maintain high quality learner-centred instruction. A faculty member is also required to work collaboratively with all TR Department members.

To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need

  • A Master's degree (in-progress considered) in Therapeutic Recreation or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of one credential must have a major in Therapeutic Recreation, Recreation or Leisure Studies.
  • A Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist ( CTRS ) designation is preferred.
  • Knowledge and expertise in the following areas :
  • a) Cultural diversity and ability to work with people of varying ages and abilities

    b) The theories & constructs of health, the different dimensions of health, healthy lifestyles, theories and models of health behavior change.

    Assets include :

    1. A range of teaching experiences with post-secondary experience and demonstrating a strong commitment to innovative approaches to teaching and learning.

    2. Excellent communication skills and willingness to work cooperatively in a team setting

    3. The ability to use online learning platforms is required even for in-person teaching.
