What can you expect in this role?

Reporting to the Director, Business Development, the Business Development Specialist is a key sales support role within the Sales & Distribution team, acting as the primary point of contact for brokers and supporting Advisor(s), Business Development (BD). They are responsible for deploying Broker services and solutions and providing excellent customer service to support operational efficiency in order to create strategic growth opportunities across lines of business and drive Broker satisfaction.

They possess strong knowledge of Family's Personal Insurance lines of business. The incumbent supports the Business Development Advisor in managing Broker relationships to drive profitable GWP growth and collaborates with peers in BD, Regional UW Operations and Claims in his / her region to share market intelligence and deliver a consistent Broker experience which meets or exceeds Broker expectations and needs.

In addition, the Business Development Specialist is responsible for the functional system training and product training for both internal users and external broker partners. In order to meet this objective, the incumbent will identify system training needs, develop training guidelines and schedules, conduct broker focus groups and receive and facilitate feedback on Family’s system & Economical products.

Responsibilities

As Business Development Advisor, you will be responsible for :

Broker training and development :

  • Training needs analysis, preparing annual training plans, creating and implementing new training (module) seminars for brokers and delivering effective Point of Sale (POS) & SME Pathway (CI) training seminars.
  • Assist in the development of marketing campaigns and their results and compile competitor information to create reports outlining the differences across the market.
  • Regular communication with brokers and customer service representatives on new product information or changes to existing products.

Broker Planning :

  • Providing inputs to Business Development Advisors on Broker account plans, evaluating brokers, and developing and implementing an annual Broker service advisory plan.
  • Collecting and escalating market intelligence in PI & CI and providing input to inform competitive analysis.
  • Operational Expertise (Broker Service Advisory) :

  • Acts as regional SME for Broker and Family's broker-facing systems and technologies, helping build an understanding of these systems among Advisors, Business Development and other regional resources, as appropriate.
  • Provides advisory and consultative services to Brokers on Family’s & Economical system functionality.
  • Works with brokerage staff on-site to provide support and guidance to Brokers concerning relevant Family / Economical systems and tools.
  • Supports deployment of new services and offerings to Brokers.
  • Provides support and input to the Director, Business Development on new services and offerings and continuous improvement opportunities for Family's services, Broker-facing tools, workflow / processes, systems, etc.
  • Adheres to relevant guidelines; implements and monitors operational controls and risk protocols for the Brokers he / she supports, escalating issues where appropriate.
  • Sales Management :

  • Works with the Business Development Advisor to manage the pipeline of opportunities for the Brokers.
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with key contacts within brokerage organizations, identifies opportunities (e.g., new business, portfolio transfers, etc.) primarily with regards to Personal Insurance & SME Commercial, and works with the Advisor, Business Development to report and pursue opportunities.
  • Supports the development and implementation of sales pursuit plans, portfolio transfers, and new Broker Appointments in PI & CI.
  • Develop feasible / profitable innovative solution(s) working together with the Broker, Advisor, BD, and Underwriters.
  • Broker Experience :

  • A cts as the primary point of contact for day-to-day brokerage staff business inquiries or complaints regarding Family’s & Eco’s SME Pathway products or services.
  • Consistently documents each Broker interaction, inquiry, and complaint.
  • Engages Family’s & Eco’s SMEs and primary Broker relationship owners, as appropriate, to escalate brokerage staff business inquiries and complaints for either further investigation or approval of a proposed solution.
  • Partners with peers in Underwriting and Claims to provide exceptional Broker experience across multiple touchpoints.
  • Relays Brokers' insights and feedback concerning Family’s & Economical’s strategic change initiatives to the appropriate stakeholders within Family to help inform / adapt change management efforts.
  • What you bring to the role?

    Experience & Educational Qualifications

  • University degree in any discipline, or College diploma in a relevant discipline
  • 4-5 years of Property and Casualty experience, including 2+ years in a broker-facing property and casualty role (e.g., within Underwriting, Sales & Distribution, etc.). Within the 4-5 years, 2–3 years of experience with ICBC and personal lines products (either as a broker, trainer or marketing representative)
  • Intermediate to advanced MS Office Skills with emphasis on Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with prior knowledge and understanding of Broker workflows, operations and technology, or work experience in a sales or marketing capacity
  • Must have or be willing to obtain a level 1 general insurance license within 60 days of employment. Family will cover the cost of obtaining the license.
  • Certificate in training development, or similar, is preferred.
  • Experience and / or working knowledge of the broker office environment.
  • Active in the CAIB or CIP program preferred or willingness to start participation.
  • Additional designations are considered an asset (e.g., FCIP, Certified Sales Professional (CSP))
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills. Able to interpret complex system functionality into comprehensive training media / materials / delivery supporting a quick transfer of learning experience from the classroom to the workplace.
  • Ability to connect easily with people and make them feel at ease in a training environment.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to work well independently with minimal supervision.
  • A positive, personal and friendly professional style whether working with internal colleagues or externally with all levels of broker clients and vendors.
  • A passion for fulfillment from building long-term and mutually rewarding professional relationships.
  • Flexible to travel throughout the province as required.
  • Valid driver's license with a driving record acceptable to the company
  • Attend broker conferences.
  • Pay range for this role is $55,800 - $102,800

    Actual salary for the role may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate and other factors including but not limited to, skills, education, experience, working conditions and the local labour market.  In addition to base pay, eligible employees may participate in various incentive plans which are paid out at the company's discretion and subject to individual and company performance.
