Job Summary
The Maintenance Engineer is responsible for operating and maintaining building equipment and infrastructure related to boilers cooling towers pumps air compressors geo-exchange and district energy system HVAC systems controls assists in fire suppression systems and other related equipment to ensure the campus remains operational 24 hours a day seven days a week.
Organizational Status
Reports to the Charge Engineer. Maintains effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external groups including UBC faculties staff and administrative departments other institutions external agencies advisory committees professional associations and community organizations.

Consequence of Error / Judgement
Errors in judgement could result in damage to buildings and / or equipment classes being cancelled or delayed lost revenue from chargeable booking unnecessary over time delayed or cancelled events. Errors in dealing with security and / or emergency calls could lead to increased risk of injury or property damage. Failure to recognize and report hazards and apply safe work methods such as lock-out procedures could result in safety hazards to the campus community and co-workers. Campus community safety would be compromised. It could also cause a backlog in the work load and delays in critical business functions. Poor judgement could result in injury to staff students and faculty reduced service to the University and its staff as well as significant financial repercussions.

Reports to the Charge Engineer. Under the general direction of the Manager Engineering and Utility Services.

Minimum Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent plus completion of trades training in Power engineering to journeyman status (4th class power Engineer).Over 6 years progressive related experience. Cross connection control certification an asset. Experience in refrigeration HVAC repair and gas fitting an asset. Building Automation Systems experience is also an asset. Basic computer skills in MS Word Excel and Outlook. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required. Valid Class 5 Driver s License required. Ability to perform strenuous physical work and assume uncomfortable awkward positions. Required to lift up to 50lbs on a frequent basis. Must be able to work in areas which have higher levels of noise using proper hearing protection. Proven ability to operate hand and power tools and equipment work in confined areas withstand heights and / or long periods of bending and working in extreme climate conditions on a continuous basis. Able to work flexible hours and or shifts and possibly weekends. This position is also required to share the responsibility of being on-call. Analytical thinking that incorporates creativity and innovation. Flexibility and comfort with change. Good customer service and communication skills are required. Must be a team player. Rotational shifts may be required due to operational requirements.
