Job description

At Collins Steel, the primary role of the Engineer is to conduct designs in accordance with industry accepted engineering practices. These designs should be cost effective, and when applicable facilitate efficient fabrication and installation. The Engineer works collaboratively with the Detailers to produce quality fabrication and installation drawings. The Engineer shall conduct their professional practices per the APEGA Guideline for Ethical Practice.

TEAMWORK. The Engineer needs to collaborate with the team of engineers, detailers, fabricators and installers to produce designs that are cost effective, and efficient to fabricate and install.

CARING. Through their designs, the Engineer shall do their part to see that Collins Steel is successful, while ensuring the well-being of the public.

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT. The Engineer must continually learn in order to stay at the forefront of knowledge and best practices. The Engineer must also continually evaluate their processes to ensure they produce a product that is high in quality and efficient to produce.

RELIABILITY. The Engineer needs to produce designs in a timely manner in order to allow Collins Steel to deliver on its commitments to the client.

Key Skills and Mindset :

Engineers must be registered with APEGA as Professional Members, and they must be competent in structural connection design to the point where they are capable of designing and taking Professional responsibility for the project.

The engineer needs to be conscientious, meaning they are analytical, precise and systematic in their work. They also need to be results orientated meaning they need produce designs that are high quality, efficient to manufacture, and produce them in a timely manner. They also need to be able to work closely with detailers to produce high quality shop and installation drawings, and work with fabricators and installers to produce efficient designs.

Shift Details : The overall expectation is to work on average 9 hours per day or 44 hours per week. To facilitate collaboration and problem-solving among team members, we require a presence in the office between 8 : 30am and 3 : 30pm. We offer flexibility for employees to make up the remaining hours between 7 : 00am and 5 : 00pm.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Authenticate Professional Documents per APEGA’s Practice Standard for Authenticating Professional Documents
  • Conduct preliminary design of steel structures for estimating purposes
  • Design of structural steel connections per contract documents and applicable codes
  • Design miscellaneous steel
  • Ensure engineering and detailing practices comply with applicable codes, accepted engineering practices and Collins Steel standards
  • Improve the Collins Steel engineering and detailing standards
  • Provide mentorship to Engineer(s)-in-Training
  • Provide technical support to Detailers
  • Provide welding details per Collins Steel Weld Procedure Data Sheets (WPDS) and Weld Procedure Specifications (WPS)
