Curriculum Development and Management
- Design and development : Creating, reviewing, and updating the TESL curriculum, ensuring it aligns with current best practices, TESL Ontario TESL program accreditation standards, and the program's learning objectives. This includes syllabus design, materials selection, and assessment strategies.
- Curriculum mapping : Ensuring coherence and progression across courses within the program.
- Staying current : Keeping abreast of developments in the field of TESL and incorporating relevant research and methodologies into the curriculum.
Faculty Support and Supervision
Hiring and onboarding : Participating in the recruitment and hiring of TESL Ontario certified TESL instructors.Mentoring and professional development : Providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities to faculty members. This might include classroom observation, feedback, and workshops.Performance evaluation : Conducting performance reviews of TESL instructors.Scheduling : Coordinating teaching schedules and ensuring adequate coverage for all courses.Program Administration and Evaluation
Budget management : Managing the program's budget, if applicable.Program assessment : Evaluating the effectiveness of the TESL program and making recommendations for improvement. This often involves collecting data on student outcomes and program feedback.Accreditation : Working on accreditation-related tasks, such as preparing annual reports for and responding to messages from TESL Ontario.Liaison with other departments / institutions : Collaborating with other departments within the institution or with external organizations.Policy development : Contributing to the development of program policies and procedures.Student Support and Management
Admissions and advising : Conducting the admissions process and providing academic advising to students.Student progress monitoring : Tracking student progress, identifying students who need support, and implementing interventions.Addressing student concerns : Handling student complaints or academic issues.Maintaining student records : Ensuring accurate record-keeping of student grades, attendance, and other relevant information.Teaching
Teaching theory and methodology courses.Arranging practicum placements.Other Potential Responsibilities
Community outreach : Building relationships with the local community and promoting the TESL program.Grant writing : Seeking funding opportunities to support the program.Required Qualifications
Master's Degree : A Master's degree or a PhD in TESL / TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, or a closely related field.Certification
Valid TESL Ontario TESL trainer Certification for academic coordinator, practicum supervisor, theory instructor, and methodology instructor roles.Experience
Language Teaching Experience : Extensive experience (5+ years) teaching ESL adults in a variety of contexts in Canada is required. EFL teaching experience is an asset.TESL Training Experience : Experience in training TESL teachers is required.
Administrative Experience : Experience in program administration, curriculum development, or faculty supervision is an asset.Knowledge and Skills
Deep understanding of TESL principles and methodologies : A strong grasp of current best practices in TESL, including language acquisition theories, teaching methodologies, assessment techniques, and curriculum design.Knowledge of accreditation standards : Familiar with the TESL Ontario accreditation standards.Curriculum development skills : Able to design, develop, and evaluate TESL curricula.Faculty supervision and mentoring skills : Able to provide guidance and support to TESL instructors.Communication and interpersonal skills : Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Organizational and management skills : Able to manage the program effectively, including budgeting, scheduling, and record-keeping.Preferred Qualifications
