About The Role
DNV Energy Systems’ group has an exciting opportunity for a Power System Engineer (EMT Studies) in its Renewables & Power Grids service area. The Engineer will contribute to delivering technical insights and providing customers with excellent service in power generation, transmission, and distribution systems. This role is based in Toronto (ON) or Montreal (QB) with a dynamic hybrid schedule. The position may also be considered at other DNV offices within Canada. Further details will be shared during the interview process.
What You’ll Do
- Perform Electro-magnetic Transient (EMT) studies such as sub synchronous resonance (SSR), control interaction (SSCI), ferro-resonance, temporary overvoltage (TOV), switching overvoltage (SOV), transient recovery voltage (TRV), harmonic, energization, etc.
- Develop/tune PSCAD models and perform PSCAD/PSSE model benchmarking analyses
- Produce and/or review technical reports and presentations for external customers
- Ensure timely completion of projects while meeting quality and budget expectations
- Stay up to date with relevant industry standards such as IEEE, NERC, CIGRE
- Develop or modify automation scripts to enhance the efficiency, speed, and accuracy of technical simulations
- Contribute to the team’s research and innovation activities to develop new techniques and analytical tools
- Cultivate customer relationships and provide technical advisory support for generations and large load interconnections to the transmission system

About You
What is Required
- Master’s degree in electrical engineering with emphasis in Power System and Control
- Hands-on experience with PSCAD software
- Knowledge of inverter-based resources (wind, solar, battery storage) and associated control
- Fundamentals of electric power systems and renewable energy, small-signal and large-signal control stability
- Strong organizational, interpersonal (written and verbal), problem-solving and analytical skills
- Ability to work in a dynamic team environment
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills
- Pre-employment background screening
What Is Preferred
- Active PE license
- Doctorate in Electric Power Systems
- Hands-on EMT/SSR study experience
- Experience scripting languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB) for automation and data analysis
- Experience with power system analysis software (PSS/E, DigSilent PowerFactory, TSAT, TARA, ASPEN)
- Knowledge of ERCOT market planning and interconnection practices
- Knowledge of other markets (PJM, MISO, NYISO, ISONE) planning and interconnection practices
