Job Summary :
Responsible for building and strengthening networks in the University to provide support for students who are in difficulty or crisis as a result of personal or academic situations. This role will provide outreach services and provide case consultation to staff and faculty about students in difficulty or distress and interim counselling, support and case management care to students experiencing barriers, including mental health challenges and / or challenges with substance misuse. Responsible for investigating allegations of student misconduct contrary to campus community standards under the Student Code of Rights and Responsibilities. Support the University’s critical incident response in relation to students by providing practical and organizational support to staff and students dealing with localized, smaller-scale incidents that occur on campus.
Purpose and Key Functions :
Student Case Management
- Provide initial psychological counselling services and referral in response to a critical incident involving students.
- Consult on cases to staff and faculty with questions or concerns about students in crisis. These requests for assistance may be made by academic departments, residences, registrars, student services, and other departments, including off-campus community agencies.
- Provide students with interim counselling and support, referring student to appropriate campus and community resources.
- Develop effective and sensitive outreach and support strategies to students who are experiencing a mental health crisis.
- Advise senior administrators, construct and lead response teams.
- Use professional judgement to respond to signs of psychological distress, including signs of suicide risk, suicide ideation, risk of harm to others.
- Plan and coordinate educational events for staff and faculty on issues related to students in difficulty or distress.
- Provide information about the Students in Distress or Difficulty Protocol and offer resources and information about how to access the support services.
- Provide guidance about relevant university policies and procedures to students, staff, faculty and administrators, identifying and explaining university decisions.
- Provide case management support for students experiencing barriers, including mental health challenges and / or challenges with substance misuse.
- Liaise with various support services in order to facilitate student’s connection to multiple supports.
- Coordinate transitions and support for students to community mental health resources, specialized treatment programs and crisis intervention by collecting all pertinent information, developing a support plan and following up.
- Support students who have been referred from the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities process for on-going guidance.
- Develop a support response that is scalable and tailored to each specific student.
- Make contact with, follow up with, support and / or refer at-risk students to assess and determine needs of the student.
- Assist students, and designated emergency contact, with internal procedures related to petitions for special consideration, retroactive accommodations, interim accommodations, leaves of absence and appeals.
- Support follow through of Student of Concern Team decisions including arranging for assessments, liaising with treating professionals, writing request for opinion letters and providing support with the voluntary / involuntary withdrawals and leaves.
- Assist with the transition planning for students who have been withdrawn from studies involuntarily or voluntarily under the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
Code of Rights and Responsibilities Administration
Respond to complaints of misconduct and apply a variety of dispute resolution techniques to resolve the complaints including, but not limited to, mediation, informal and formal resolution.Facilitate the successful resolution of student conduct complaints through either formal or informal means, and with student participation.Assess conflicts and determine the best course of action in seeking a resolution.Investigate allegations of student misconduct in violation of the Student Code of Conduct from a number of sources including security, faculty, staff, and students.Engage students in conversations for the purpose of investigating any alleged violation.Gather facts and engage students in self reflective discussion that encourages the student to understand the advantages of taking responsibility for their actions.Write sanction letters and hearing notes and ensure consistency of evidence and fairness.Prepare and present submissions for formal hearing proceedings and for meeting established standards of fairness and consistency in investigations.Provide advice to students of options available to them, and their particular rights and responsibilities within the University judicial process.Initiate and coordinate any necessary follow up with students based on the outcome of the judicial process.Administer and coordinate responses to off-campus misconduct in partnership with campus and community agencies through an off-campus program for students.Liaise with McMaster Security Services and local authorities on specific cases of student misconduct to ensure consistency, information sharing and timeliness in all incidents that impact community standards on campus.Collect and maintain accurate records and ensure confidentiality of all Student Support and Case Management Office matters in their assigned area including case management notes, investigation notes, incident reports, and behaviour contracts.Assist with the training about the Code and training of the members of the University’s Peer Conduct Board program.Design, coordinate, facilitate, and deliver workshops designed to be educational sanctions for students.Create promotional material for related to the Student Support and Case Management office.Work in collaboration to make recommendations and revisions to policies.Supervision :
Ensure adherence to quality standards and procedures for short-term staff and volunteers.Provide orientation and show procedures to others.Requirements :
Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Education, Counselling Psychology or related field.Requires a minimum of 5 years of experience in crisis management and / or case management.
