Laboratory Technician
Basic Function
Petro-Canada Lubricants Inc. an HF Sinclair company, located in Mississauga, Ontario is seeking two permanent full-time Laboratory Technicians for the Quality Control Lab.
These are entry-level positions within the line of progression of the Laboratory according to the terms and conditions of the Laboratory’s performance-based progression program (PBP) and the collective agreement.
The Quality Control Laboratory is seeking a fulltime Afternoon shift Technician and a full-time Night Shift Technician.
Reporting to the Laboratory Coordinator, the Lab Technician is primarily responsible for the safe and accurate testing of lubricant and grease finished products and unit streams in accordance to our established Lubricant Management System (LMS) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
The incumbent continually seeks greater knowledge about the systems, processes and hazards in the workplace, specifically in the laboratory setting in order to understand not just what you do but why you do it.
With a responsibility to provide quality results, the incumbent does not take or tolerate shortcuts and if the procedure is incorrect, endeavors to fix it.
Job Duties
- Perform physical and analytical requirements in a consistent, accurate and safe manner
- Perform routine and periodic testing according to established LMS procedure and work instructions
- Conduct testing of samples (including but not limited to certification tanks, blends and refinery stream samples)
- Accurately record data on worksheets, in spreadsheets and into computer systems (LIMS and SAP)
- Performs quality checks, calibrations, understands statistical process control and control charting
- Troubleshoots instrument or other issues
- Reviews Learning Management System (LMS) and Work Instructions as required
- Participates in the organizations safety program (PPP) and performs observations
- Maintains good housekeeping standards
- Ability to identify inventory and non-inventory items in need of replenishment or repair
Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their supervisor, as determined from time to time in their sole and complete discretion
Experience
- A minimum of two years of relevant Analytical Laboratory experience is mandatory
- Laboratory instrumentation experience and knowledge is an asset
Education Level
Successfully completed a post-secondary degree or diploma in a Chemistry-related discipline
Required Skills
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
- Knowledge of WHMIS, SDS and GHS
- Able to work safely in a team environment
- Strong communication skills both oral and written
- Competent in Microsoft Office programs and experience with SAP, LIMS
- Proven analytical skills with high attention to detail
- Questioning attitude
- Ability to troubleshoot instrumentation issues
- Collaborate with others in order to achieve the needs of the business in a safe, reliable and timely manner
Work Conditions
- This is a unionized position with UNIFOR 593
- As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must progress to Lab Technician level 1 as per the terms of the collective agreement
- Hours of work are Sunday to Thursday (with Friday / Saturday off); Afternoon Shift is 3 : 00 p.m. to 11 : 30 p.m. and Night shift is 11 : 00 p.m. to 7 : 30 a.m.
